Roma sale 27 Jan 2026: High temperatures greet 7400 head yarding

This week’s sale brought warm temperatures and large numbers of cattle, with just over 7400 head of cattle penned.

The regular buyers, lotfeeders and backgrounders were present, competing for the yarding which hailed from many areas from across Australia.

The yarding was drawn from the local Maranoa supply district including Amby, Injune, Jackson, Mitchell and Yuleba, and from the western regions of Augathella, Blackall and Tambo.

Cattle were also consigned from further south; from Bollon, Dirranbandi, Mungindi and St George in Queensland, and from Coonamble in New South Wales.

BRF Southern offloaded Santa Gertrudis cross steers, selling to 554c/kg for an average weight of 271kg to receive a return of $1,502/hd.

Operating out of ‘Breena Plains’, St George, one pen of Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched 570c/kg, weighing an average of 293kg to make $1,671/hd.

A further pen of Santa Gertrudis cross steers made 570c/kg, to weigh 260kg for a return of $1,480/hd.

The line was consigned through Elders Roma.

One pen of Santa Gertrudis cross steers made 518c/kg weighing an average of 377kg to make $1,955/hd.

Another pen of Santa Gertrudis cross steers sold for 544c/kg, weighing in at 323kg to receive a return of $1,757/hd.

The line was consigned through Nutrien Roma.

 

NLRS Commentary:

With blistering heat Roma Agents yarded 7405 head. All the regular buyers attending however selective in their purchasers. A quality yarding penned with a sprinkling of off types included. The market showed better finished bullocks, heavy heifers and prime cows sold to similar rates to the previous sale and most other categories struggled.

Yearling steers 200 to 280kg sold from 310c to 570c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg made to 570c to average 515c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg selling to 540c to restockers and 520c/kg to Lot Feeders. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg to 500c to Lot feeders and 508c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers over 480kg to 500c/kg to Lot Feeders.

Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold from 328c to 420c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg made to 468c to average 408c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg topped 456c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg made to 450c to restockers and 432c/kg to processors. Yearling heifers over 480kg also to processors at 442c/kg.

Grown steers 400 to 500kg made to 474c to Lot Feeders almost 50c/kg less than the previous sale. Grown steers 500 to 600kg to 488c/kg to processors. Bullocks over 600kg to 466c/kg to processors. Heavy heifers over 540kg to 448c/kg to processors.

Almost 1300 cows penned. Prime score 3 cows over 520kg sold from 347c to 402c/kg. The 2 score cows 420 to 520kg sold from 260c to 360c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg to 410c/kg to processors. Bulls over 600kg to 408c/kg also to processors. A run of 149 cows & calves sold from $600/unit to $2,660/unit to average $2,161/unit.

A total of 7405 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 546c/kg and averaged 488c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 594c/kg and averaged 503c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 570c/kg and averaged 506c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 536c/kg and averaged 498c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 506c/kg and averaged 464c/kg.

Laurita Pastoral Company, Laurita, Tambo sold Angus cross steers to 594c/kg, reaching a top of $1,661 to average $1,632.

Tavis Richmond Sharp – Jones, Wardilla, Charleville sold Santa Gertrudis steers to 588c/kg, reaching a top of $1,294 to average $1,294.

DL Jones & KL Sharpe, Wardilla, Charleville sold Santa Gertrudis steers to 588c/kg, reaching a top of $1,689 to average $1,453.

BRF Southern, Breena Plains, St George sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 570c/kg, reaching a top of $1,680 to average $1,502.  The Santa Gertrudis cross heifers sold to 392c/kg, reaching a top of $1,094 to average $957.

DJ & NH Chandler, Cobbadah, Injune sold Simmental cross steers to 562c/kg, reaching a top of $1,934 to average $1,774.  The Angus heifers sold to 456c/kg, reaching a top of $1,714 to average $1,429.

Bethungra Trust, Bethungra Park, Condamine sold Angus cross steers to 552c/kg, reaching a top of $1,700 to average $1,588.

RW & KE Thorne, Holmleigh, Mitchell sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 541c/kg, reaching a top of $2,633 to average $1,621.

J & T Nowlan, Callala, Augathella sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 538c/kg, reaching a top of $1,686 to average $1,568.  The Angus cross heifers sold to 424c/kg, reaching a top of $1,305 to average $1,228.

G Wilson, Yacca, Injune sold Charolais cross steers to 508c/kg, reaching a top of $2,195 to average $2,066.  The Charolais cross heifers sold to 450c/kg, reaching a top of $1,887 to average $1,788.

RA & KA Crozier, Highlands, Tambo sold Angus steers to 506c/kg, reaching a top of $2,089 to average $1,675.

SF & HE Wilkin, Everbroke, Roma sold Charolais cross steers to 490c/kg, reaching a top of $2,432 to average $2,381.

Frith Farming Company, Wondolin, Wallumbilla, sold Angus cross steers to 460c/kg, reaching a top of $3,182 to average $2,070.

 

Heifers under 200kg topped at 370c/kg and averaged 266c/kg, while heifers in the 200-280kg range topped at 428c/kg and averaged 387c/kg. Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 370c/kg and averaged 298c/kg. Cows in the 400-500kg range topped at 389c/kg, averaging 347c/kg. Cows in the 500-600kg range topped at 410c/kg, averaging 372c/kg. Cows over 600kg topped at 402c/kg, averaging 385c/kg.

Hazelmont Pastoral Holdings, Allandale, Roma sold Angus cross cows to 389c/kg, reaching a top of $2,348 to average $2,348.

Freeman Pastoral Company, Miley View, Roma sold Brahman cross cows and calves sold to $2,660 to average $2,568.
