Roma Saleyards report

Just shy of 6000 head of cattle went to market at Roma Saleyards today with larger lines of heavy feeder steers consigned.

A decreased yarding on last week’s sale did not detract from the quality sold with cattle drawn locally and from western regions such as Hughenden, Quilpie, Augathella, Winton, Jundah and Cunnamulla.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Bourke and Coonamble, New South Wales.

The market remained firm, however softened slightly in some categories reflective of condition.

The cow market was an exception with over 1200 head yarded and reflective of a dearer trend gaining upwards of 10 cents across categories.

The regular processors, feed-lotters and backgrounders were present and active throughout the sale.

Ian and Edwina Graham, Kidston, Roma sold 22 Brahman steers for 358c/kg to weigh 593kg and return $2125 per head.

The commercial producers operate a predominantly breeding enterprise running females across their block northwest of Injune.

Their better-quality heifers are retained within their operation as future breeders with their Roma based property utilised for fattening purposes.

Mr Graham said they were targeting the processor market in today’s sale.

Crediting a favourable season, Mr Graham said ideal market prices aligned with the timing of the steer offload.
