Roma store sale 27 Aug 2019: Yearlings dominate yarding

Cattle were drawn from a wide supply area and a good buyer panel was present and operating.

Yearling cattle dominated the yarding and the overall quality of the was varied reflective of the current season.

Prices fell mostly for steers but remained firm for runs of quality lines of single vendor cattle.

Heifers saw improvements while heavy cows fell slightly.

Lightweight yearling steers under 280kg fell by 8c to 16c/kg. The medium weight yearling steers under 330kg fell by 6c to 17c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed fell by 6c to 19c and heavy weight yearling steers to feed fell by 1c/kg.

Lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers rose by 3c to 11c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed or background fell by 8c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to slaughter rose by 19c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows rose by 5c and the medium weight 3 score cows rose by 3c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows fell by 2c, while the heavy weight 4 score cows fell by 4c/kg.

The largest sample of lightweight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers sold to 302.2c to average 286c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers made to 308.2c to average 285c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed made to 295.2c to average 276c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed including a run of quality local EU steers sold to 305.2c to average 296c/kg.

A good sample of lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 264.2c to average 239c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg sold to 236.2c to average 226c/kg. The largest sample of medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to slaughter made to 258.2c to average 240c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers sold to a top of 284.2c to average 266c/kg.

The best of the limited numbers of grown steers made to 295.2c to average 289c while the largest number of grown heifers reached 250.2c to average 245c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows sold to 201.2c to average 188c and medium weight 3 score cows sold to 238.2c to average 223c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 230c to average 221c w.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 290c/kg and averaged 253c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 302c/kg and averaged 272c/kg.

Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 308c/kg and averaged 265c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 296c/kg and averaged 270c/kg.

Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 310c/kg and averaging 283c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $850/unit.

AJ & SJ Smith, Openbah, St George sold Simmental cross steers to 296c/kg, reaching a top of $980 to average $759. The Simmental cross heifers sold to 262c/kg, reaching a top of $889 to average $681.

Dalco Pastoral, Sugarloaf, Wallumbilla sold Santa steers to 295c/kg, reaching a top of $1,034 to average $906. The Santa heifers sold to 224c/kg, reaching a top of $594 to average $521.

MD Brodie, Rostock, Yuleba sold Brangus cross steers to 290c/kg, reaching a top of $984 to average $679. The Brangus cross heifers sold to 250c/kg, reaching a top of $695 to average $501.

RM & MB Quinlan, Yanna, Charleville sold Angus cross steers to 272c/kg, reaching a top of 1,230 to average $739.

Heifers under 220kg topped at 232c/kg and averaged 202c/kg, while heifers in the 220-280kg range topped at 264c/kg and averaged 232c/kg. Heifers in the 280-350kg range topped at 262c/kg, averaging 221c/kg. Heifers in the 350-450kg range topped at 284c/kg, averaging 240c/kg.

RH, MR & FL Miller, North Kooringa, Roma sold Angus heifers to 264c/kg, reaching a top of $662 to average $529.

GS & CJ White, Marionvale, Surat sold Charolais cross heifers to 253c/kg, reaching a top of $851 to average $680.

Cows in the 300-400kg range reached 210c/kg and averaged 173c/kg, while cows in the 400kg-500kg range reached 250c/kg and averaged 203c/kg. Cows over 500kg topped at 243c/kg, averaging 228c/kg.
