Roma Saleyards market report – Tuesday, 26 November

Just over 4200 head of cattle were offloaded at Roma Saleyards this week as local producers experienced recent beneficial rainfall in the lead up to the summer months.
Prices remained firm with dearer trends upwards of 10 cents reflected in some categories dependent on quality and condition.
The yarding featured several lines of quality weaner steers and lighter weight heifers, which sold to an active buyers’ presence of processors, backgrounders and feed-lotters.
Lines were once again drawn primarily from the Maranoa and western regions such as Morven, Julia Creek, McKinlay, Augathella, Jundah, Winton, Blackall, Longreach and Quilpie among others.
Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Mungindi and Walgett, New South Wales, and Alice Springs, Northern Territory once again highlighting Roma Saleyards as the marketplace of choice.
The Frith family, Frith Farming Company, Wondolin, Wallumbilla offloaded 126 Angus cross and Hereford cross steers and 174 Angus cross and Hereford cross heifers.
A joint cropping and cattle breeding operation, the offload was a part of the family’s annual turnoff.
Their steer line averaged 385c/kg at 357kg to return an average of $1371/hd.
Three pens of their Angus cross steers sold for a straight 386c/kg.
A pen of their 20 Angus cross steers sold for 386c/kg to weigh 370kg and return $1429/hd.
A further pen of their eight Angus cross weaner steers reached 454c/kg to weigh 290kg and returned $1317/hd.
The Frith’s 174 Angus cross and Hereford cross heifers averaged 334c/kg at 349kg to return an average of $1168/hd.
A pen of their 34 Angus cross heifers sold for 343c/kg to weigh 317kg and return $1086/hd.
Recently finishing their harvest season, the commercial producers were preparing to plant their sorghum crops ahead of the summer months.

Capitalising on the recent rainfall, the Lee family, Chesterfield, St George offloaded 30 Angus cross weaner steers to average 469c/kg at 227kg to return an average of $1062/hd.
A pen of their 22 Angus cross weaner steers topped 490c/kg to weigh 213kg and return $1043/hd.
The pen saw an increase of 54 cents on last week’s maximum of 436c/kg in the 200-to-280-kilogram weight range category.
A further pen of their five Angus cross weaner steers fetched 440c/kg to weigh 278kg and returned $1223/hd.
The pen too saw a premium of four cents on last week’s maximum of 436c/kg in the same weight range category.
The producers also offloaded 22 Angus cross weaner heifers to fetch 340c/kg weighing 256kg and returned $872/hd.
The line was booked through Brendan Devine of Devine Rural and consigned to Roma through MAA Livestock and Property seen here with livestock agent Sam Scott.
In the female selection, Lyndale Grazing, Lyndale, Roma offloaded 100 no.4 Simbrah and Angus cross heifers to average 331c/kg at 356kg to return an average of $1178/hd.
A predominately breeding operation, the commercial producers run Simmental bulls over Brahman cows, and subsequently cross Angus bulls over their maiden heifers.
A pen of their 21 Simbrah heifers sold for 345c/kg to weigh 378kg and return $1304/hd.
A further three pens fetched 332c/kg.
A further pen of their 16 Angus cross heifers fetched 332c/kg to weigh 373kg and returned $1238/hd.
The producers targeted the feedlot and backgrounder markets in their offload.

Cows in the 330-to-400-kilogram range reached 270c/kg and averaged 220c/kg, whereas cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 292c/kg to average 249c/kg.
Cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 300c/kg, averaging 280c/kg. Cows over 600 kilograms topped at 295c/kg to average 280c/kg.
NLRS Commentary:
Roma Agents were still able to yard 4,274 head after some wonderful rain. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders were present and operating on the quality lines of steers and heifers. Cattle were drawn from NT NSW as well as large areas of western and south western QLD and the local district. The market stronger for the better quality lines.
Yearling steers 200 to 280kg considerably dearer to 490c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg selling from 300c to 466c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg could not maintain the levels of last sale and sold to 388c to feed however the lighter end made to 442c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg made from 310c to 400c/kg for the better quality lines.
Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold to a dearer trend and made from 200c for the plainer types to 352c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg however did not reach the highs of last sale and made 344c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg with the majority selling from 260c to 350c/kg for better lines. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg topped 345c/kg.
Grown steers 400 to 500kg topped 330c/kg to feed. Grown steers over 600kg sold to 329c/kg to processors. Grown heifers over 540kg topped 282c/kg to processors. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg sold from 200c to 260c/kg. The 3 score cows over 520kg sold to 300c/kg. Bulls under 450kg sold to 328c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg made to 262c/kg. Heavy bulls over 600kg sold to 290c/kg.

A total of 4,274 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.
Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 480c/kg and averaged 420c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 490c/kg and averaged 412c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 466c/kg and averaged 392c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 436c/kg and averaged 362c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 400c/kg and averaged 365c/kg.
RB & AC Lee, Chesterfield, St George sold Angus cross steers to 490c/kg, reaching a top of $1,223 to average $1,062. The Angus cross heifers sold to 340c/kg, reaching a top of $872 to average $872.
Robert Picking, Yallamurra Station, Cooladdi sold Angus cross steers to 480c/kg, reaching a top of $1,327 to average $947. The Crossbred heifers sold to 316c/kg, reaching a top $918 to average $680.
