Roma store 8 Dec 2020: Cattle numbers fall

Yarding 3642 Change -964

Cattle numbers continued to fall at the second last Roma Store sale for 2020 with a total yarding of 3,642, down from the previous week by 964 head. Cattle were drawn from a wide supply area and the quality was mixed. Steers accounted for the majority of the yarding.

A good buying panel was present and however not all processors were operating. Restocker competition for PTIC females was strong. Demand remained strong for quality cattle with price variations reflective of quality deviations.

Light weight yearling steers to restockers improved by 9c to 28c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers improved by 7c to 14c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to restockers fell by 29c to 31c, while medium weight yearling heifers to feed improved by 3c to 25c/kg. Medium weight cows to processors fell by 3c to 8c, while heavy weight 3 score cows remained unchanged.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg to restockers sold to 620.2c to average 557c/kg. The largest sample of light weight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 598.2c to average 516c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to feed sold to 466.2c to average 441c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed made to 474.2c to average 435c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed reached a top of 430.2c to average 411c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a top of 514.2c to average 482c/kg. The largest sample of light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 478.2c to average 458c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 480.2c to average 452c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed made to a top of 466.2c to average 437c/kg.

A large sample of light weight grown steers to feed made to 360.2c to average 341c/kg.

Restocker demand was strong for PTIC females which saw grown heifers reach a top of 436.2c to average 380c/kg. Medium weight PTIC cows reached a top of 350.2c to average 342c/kg. Processor competition was reduced with heavy weight 3 score cows selling to 283.2c to average 280c/kg. Heavy weight 4 score cows reached a top of 290.2c to average 289c/kg. A good sample of light weight bulls to feed made to 340.2c to average 314c/kg. Cows and calves reached a top of $1875/unit.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 620c/kg and averaged 516c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 556c/kg and averaged 481c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 538c/kg and averaged 418c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 444c/kg and averaged 389c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 430c/kg and averaging 374c/kg. Cows and calves hit $1,875/unit.

Ogg & Co, Ayrshire Downs, Winton sold Santa cross steers to 610c/kg, reaching a top of $955 to average $955. The Santa cross heifers sold to 500c/kg, reaching a top of $1,435 to average $1,130.

Sheales Past Co, Mirubicon, Bollon sold Santa cross steers to 558c/kg, reaching a top of $1,332 to average $1,296.

Orallo Enterprises, Lorraine, Orallo sold Droughtmaster steers to 538c/kg, reaching a top of $1,541 to average $1,320.

Mary Elizabeth Brown, Benalla, Roma sold Limousin steers to 522c/kg, reaching a top of $1,208 to average $1,121. The Limousin cross heifers sold to 450c/kg, reaching a top of $1,150 to average $1,034.
