Roma store sale 23 July 2019: Interstate buyers compete for larger yarding

Cattle were mostly drawn from the local supply area where the dry season continues.

A good panel of buyers was present and operating with feedlot and processor competition strong. Southern processors and interstate feedlots were again operating, boosting the buyer panel.

The yarding was dominated by younger cattle with increased numbers of heavy yearling steers. Cows were also present in larger numbers with around 1600 head yarded.

Prices reflected the quality variation in the cattle yarded.

Lightweight yearling steers under 280kg rose by 8c/kg.

A good number of lightweight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers rose by 6c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed rose by 5c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers rose by 2c to 20c/kg. Lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers fell by 3c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed rose by 26c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to slaughter rose by 11c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows fell by 8c/kg, while the medium weight 3 score cows remained unchanged from last week. Heavy weight 3 score cows fell by 10c while heavy weight 4 score cows fell by 2c/kg.

The largest sample of lightweight yearling steers under 280kg sold to 318.2c to average 294c/kg. A fair sample of medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 312.2c to average 293c/kg. The best of the medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed sold to 314.2c to average 301c/kg.

Lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers sold to 264.2c to average 245c/kg. A large sample of medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed that included a run of quality spayed heifers made to a top of 306.2c to average 287c/kg.

Heavy weight yearling heifers to slaughter sold to 273.2c to average 262c/kg. The best of the medium weight grown steers sold to a top of 280c to average 265c/kg. A good sample of grown heifers under 540kg made to 275.2c to average 250c/kg.

Medium weight 2 score cows sold to 219.2c to average 198c while the medium weight 3 score cows sold to 245c to average 230c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to a top of 248.2c to average 234c and the small number of heavy weight 4 score cows made to 252.2c to average 246c/kg.

The best of the heavy weight bulls made to 285.2c to average 276c/kg.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 300c/kg and averaged 255c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 318c/kg and averaged 279c/kg.

Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 318c/kg and averaged 285c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 314c/kg and averaged 292c/kg.

Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 313c/kg and averaging 286c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $680/unit.

Iwona Partnership, Gilbrigailo, Hannaford sold Simbrah cross steers to 314c/kg, reaching a top of $1,258 to average $1,191. The Simbrah cross heifers sold to 306c/kg, reaching a top of $1,169 to average $1,058.

Main Creek Pastoral, Sunset, Dulacca sold Simmental cross steers to 314c/kg, reaching a top of $958 to average $932.

EJ & CF Rolfe, Marie Downs, Roma sold Charolais cross steers to 312c/kg, reaching a top of $1,139 to average $1,073. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 278c/kg, reaching a top of $1,037 to average $945.

Ferguson Cattle Co, Annie-Vale, Roma sold Santa steers to 310c/kg, reaching a top of $1,701 to average $1,652.

Sutton Beef, Bundabar, Glenmorgan sold Santa cross heifers to 264c/kg, reaching a top of $583 to average $478.

SJ & NE Ward, Taringa, Injune sold Charbray heifers to 260c/kg, reaching a top of $993 to average $738.

GJ & CJ Roberts, Oakleigh, Injune sold Charolais cross heifers to 260c/kg, reaching a top of $912 to average $912.

MD & WR Redden, Wenmi Farm, Roma sold Santa heifers to 250c/kg, reaching a top of $1,445 to average $931.

Cows in the 300-400kg range reached 229c/kg and averaged 159c/kg, while cows in the 400kg-500kg range reached 240c/kg and averaged 196c/kg.

Cows over 500kg topped at 252c/kg, averaging 227c/kg.
