Yarding: 5758 Change: + 123

On par with last week’s penning over 5500 head of cattle went to market at Roma Saleyards this week with firm to dearer trends reflected.

As the temperature climbed, so to the prices with upwards of 10 cents recorded across several categories.

On trend with previous weeks, the market was reflective of condition, however quality lines remained firm and sold to an active buyer presence.

The regular processors, backgrounders and feed-lotters were in attendance.

Local and afar cattle once again made up the yarding with lines trucked from western regions such as Quilpie, Charleville, McKinlay, Barcaldine, Longreach, Aramac, Jundah and Blackall among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Cloncurry in the north and Mungindi in New South Wales.

Impressing in this week’s sale were the weaner steer offloads with several quality lines on offer.

Vendors Malcolm and Cindy McQueen, Ingle Downs, Winton offloaded a run of 324 Simmental cross weaner steers to average 420c/kg weighing in at 257kg to return an average of $1078 per head.

A pen of their 30 Simmental cross steers fetched 440c/kg to weigh 270kg and returned $1190/hd.

The pen saw an increase of 12 cents on last week’s maximum of 428c/kg in the 200-to-280-kilogram weight range category.

A further pen of their 24 Simmental cross steers sold for 430c/kg to weigh 235kg and returned $1011/hd.

The offload was a part of the vendors annual turnoff.

The East family, Breedon Station, Longreach also took advantage of the weaner market selling 60 Charolais cross weaner steers to average 402c/kg at 280kg and returned $1124/hd.

Two pens of their steers sold for a straight 412c/kg.

Of those pens, 24 of their Charolais cross steers weighed in at 285kg, making 412c/kg to return $1175/hd.

The females equally impressed with several quality lines snapped up in the heifer selection.

Vendors Richard and Kim Donner, Boxvale Cattle Company offloaded a line of 176 Santa Gertrudis cross weaner heifers to average 314c/kg weighing 276kg and returned $865/hd.

Based at Boxvale, Taroom the producers are no strangers to the Roma Saleyards regularly selling out of their local yards.

A pen of their 40 Santa Gertrudis cross heifers fetched 338c/kg to weigh 303kg and returned $1023/hd.

The pen saw an increase of 20 cents on last week’s maximum of 318c/kg in the 280-to-330-kilogram weight range category.

A further pen of their 33 Santa Gertrudis cross heifers sold for 334c/kg weighing 269kg to return $898/hd.

The pen saw a premium of 28 cents on last week’s maximum of 306c/kg in the 200-to-280-kilogram weight range category.

The producers also offloaded 68 Santa Gertrudis cross weaner steers to average 419c/kg to weigh 274kg and returned $1148/hd.

Cows in the 330-to-400-kilogram range reached 224c/kg and averaged 143c/kg, whereas cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 279c/kg, averaging 235c/kg.

Cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 291c/kg to average 265c/kg.

Cows over 600-kilograms topped at 285c/kg to average 267c/kg.

 

NLRS Commentary:

Roma Agents penned 5758 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present. A mixed quality yarding of mostly western bred cattle. The market was firm to slightly dearer for the lighter weight steers and heifers but cows lost ground by 5c to 10c/kg and more in places.

Light weight Yearling steers under 200kg topping 430c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 338c to 440c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg also improved and sold to 432c/kg. However Yearling steers 330 to 400kg lost ground and made from 280c to 388c/kg.Yearling steers 400 to 480kg gained a few cents and sold to 380c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg made to 331c/kg to processors.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg sold from 228c to 332c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg with majority selling from 206c to 328c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg sold well to make 338c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg could not maintain the levels and made to 338c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg made to 326c/kg to feed. Yearling heifers over 480kg made to 316c/kg also to feed.

Grown steers 500 to 600kg with the majority making to 330c and selling from 294c/kg. Grown heifers over 540kg sold from 236c to 300c/kg. Another large number of cows were offered however could not maintain the levels of last sale. The majority of the cows were 2 score selling from 200c to 272c/kg. The 3 score cows topped 291c/kg. Bulls over 600kg sold to 293c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg sold to 278c with light bulls under 450kg making to 365c/kg.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 404c/kg and averaged 360c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 440c/kg and averaged 395c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 424c/kg and averaged 369c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 378c/kg and averaged 352c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 380c/kg and averaged 350c/kg.

Russell Mocker, Surprise, St George, sold Santa Gertrudis steers to 432c/kg, reaching a top of $1,257 to average $1,132.

David Waldron, Narran, Charleville, sold Charolais cross steers to 418c/kg, reaching a top of $1,166 to average $1,166. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 288c/kg, reaching a top of $792 to average $792.

DG & GH East, Breedon Station, Longreach sold Charolais steers to 412c/kg, reaching a top of $1,272 to average $1,124. The Charolais heifers to 310c/kg, reaching a top of $1,521 to average $1,275.

PD & JL Fisher, Quilberry, Charleville sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 386c/kg, reaching a top of $1,612 to average $1,324.

DT & CU Batt, Dillulla, Longreach sold Santa Gertrudis steers to 380c/kg, reaching a top of $1,585 to average $1,385. The Santa Gertrudis heifers sold to 270c/kg, reaching a top of $746 to average $648.

Cornish Grazing Pty Ltd, Strathdale, Mitchell sold Charolais steers to 378c/kg, reaching a top of $1,475 to average $1,460. The Charolais heifers sold to 318c/kg, reaching a top of $1,323 to average $1,272.

Campbell Pastoral Holdings, Greenhills, Mitchell sold Santa Gertrudis steers to 376c/kg, reaching a top of $1,656 to average $1,472.

MG & PLE Burgess, Banff Downs, Morven sold Limousin cross steers to 368c/kg, reaching a top of $1,649 to average $1,630.

RD Pastoral, Richmond Downs, Roma sold Angus cross steers to 368c/kg, reaching a top of $1,592 to average $1,592.

HH Macintosh & Co Partnership Cattle, Crossmor Road, Longreach sold Shorthorn cross steers to 358c/kg, reaching a top of $1,373 to average $912. The Shorthorn cross heifers sold to 286c/kg, reaching a top of $866 to average $749.

Heifers under 200kg topped at 296c/kg and averaged 232c/kg, while heifers in the 200 280kg range topped at 334c/kg and averaged 267c/kg. Heifers in the 280-330kg range topped at 338c/kg, averaging 268c/kg. Heifers in the 330-400kg range topped at 326c/kg, averaging 265c/kg. Heifers in the 400-500kg range topped at 338c/kg, averaging 280c/kg.

Lyndale Grazing 2 Pty Ltd, Lyndale, Roma sold Simbrah cross heifers to 338c/kg, reaching a top of $1,380 to average $1,357.

GC & TE Nielsen Mt Weribone Surat, sold Santa Gertrudis cross heifers to 326c/kg, reaching a top of $1,364 to average $1,198.

M & B Dascombe, Greenhills, Taroom sold Angus cross heifers to 308c/kg, reaching a top of $1,171 to average $946.

Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 224c/kg and averaged 143c/kg. Cows in the 400 500kg range topped at 279c/kg, averaging 235c/kg. Cows in the 500-600kg range topped at 291c/kg, averaging 265c/kg. Cows over 600kg topped at 285c/kg, averaging 267c/kg.
