Vendor Brian Murray, Yarrum, Roma sold 98 Santa Gertrudis, Simmental and Charolais cross steers to average 412c/kg at 396kg and returned $1629 per head.

Just shy of 11,000 head of cattle went to market at Roma Saleyards as the second sale of the new year kicked off with a bang.

The yarding saw an increase of 5,956 penned on last week’s sale.

Prices held firm to slightly softening across categories reflective of condition and quality.

Cattle were primarily sourced from the Maranoa and western regions, including Charleville, Bollon, Jundah, Quilpie, Tambo, Augathella, Thargomindah and Ilfracombe.

This week’s yarding also included several lines consigned from southern regions, such as Bourke, Lightning Ridge, Mungindi, Forbes and Broken Hill in New South Wales.

Buyer interest remained strong with active bidding.

Vendor Brian Murray, Yarrum, Roma sold 98 Santa Gertrudis, Simmental and Charolais cross steers to average 412c/kg at 396kg and returned $1629 per head.

The commercial producer operates a predominately backgrounding enterprise across his Maranoa based block.

A pen of his 31 Simmental cross steers fetched 434c/kg to weigh 333kg and returned $1446/hd.

A further pen of his 32 Simmental cross steers sold for 408c/kg weighing 403kg and returned $1643/hd.

Mr Murray said the suitability of the Santa breed to the Maranoa climate was an appeal to his operation.

“They do well for the country,” he said.

Equally impressing at this week’s sale was the Chandler family, Glentulloch, Injune who sold 169 Simmental cross steers to average 447c/kg weighing 314kg and returned $1402/hd.

A pen of their 41 Simmental cross steers reached 488c/kg to weigh 265kg and returned $1293/hd.

A further pen of their 28 Simmental cross steers sold for 458c/kg to weigh 309kg and returned $1414/hd.

Two further pens sold for a straight 450c/kg to average 335kg.

The commercial producers also offloaded 172 Simmental weaner heifers to average 368c/kg to weigh 290kg and returned $1069/hd.

Three pens sold for a straight 378c/kg with a further pen of their 29 Simmental cross heifers fetching 368c/kg.

A pen of their 28 Simmental cross heifers reached 378c/kg to weigh 307kg and returned $1162/hd.

The total of 341 head was part of the vendors annual turnoff.

The commercial producers run a primarily trading operation across their Maranoa block.

A pen of their 22 Charolais cross heifers fetched 312c/kg weighing 339kg to return $1059/hd.

A further pen of their 31 Droughtmaster cross weaner heifers sold for 310c/kg to weigh 298kg and returned $924/hd.

NLRS Commentary:

Roma Agents yarded almost  two and half times the number on last sale to 10,938 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present. Cattle were drawn from a large area of QLD with mixed quality consigned. The market could not maintain the levels of last sale however cows held firm.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg with the majority selling from 305c to top 536c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg sold from 320c to 532c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg topped 500c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg made to 456c to average 411c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg to feed made to 408c to average 377c/kg.Yearling steers over 480kg  made to 404c/kg.

Heifers also could not maintain the levels of last sale. Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg sold from 220c to 358c/kg for the better lines. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg with the better pens topping 382c selling from 230c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg  topped 376c to restockers and 364c to feed selling from 200c for the plainer types. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg also lost ground on the previous sale and made from 270c to 378c/kg to restockers. Heifers over 400kg with processors paying 330c and 358c/kg to feed.

Grown steers 500 to 600kg topped 352c to processors. Bullocks over 600kg made to 340c/kg. Grown heifers over 540kg also lost ground and sold from 220c to 342c/kg for the better pens. Approx 1700 cows penned with the market firm on last sale. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg sold 200c to 278c/kg. The 3 score cows over 520kg topped 312c to average 295c/kg. Bulls over 600kg sold to 300c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg sold from 260c to 318c/kg.

A total of 10,938 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 536c/kg and averaged 406c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 532c/kg and averaged 417c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 478c/kg and averaged 408c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 466c/kg and averaged 390c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 408c/kg and averaged 370c/kg.

Plainby Pastoral Company, Plainby, Richmond sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 536c/kg, reaching a top of $1,665 to average $1,269.

WJ & CL Glasson, Cooper Ponds, Blackall sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 498c/kg, reaching a top of $1,331 to average $1,173.  The Santa Gertrudis cross heifers sold to 345c/kg, reaching a top of $1,209 to average $882.

KC Chandler, Glentulloch, Injune sold Simmental steers to 488c/kg, reaching a top of $1,646 to average $1,402.  The Simmental cross heifers sold to 378c/kg, reaching a top of $1,243 to average $1,068.

SD & MJ Russell, Wodonga, Mungallala sold Charolais cross steers to 468c/kg, reaching a top of $1,511 to average $1,320.  The Charolais cross heifers sold to 382c/kg, reaching a top of $1,177 to average $1,038.
