Roma sale 20 May 2025: Weaner offloads continue

Seasonal weaner offloads continue to move through the Roma Saleyards with several local lines of weaners as well as heavy feeders sold under the hammer.

With just under 6000 yarded, the laneways were packed with all the regular processors, feedlotters all bidding amongst the action.

Market prices were firm to dearer for the better lines.

The yarding featured cattle consigned primarily from the local supply district, including Roma, Mungallala, Wallumbilla, and Taroom.

Cattle were also drawn from as far as Julia Creek and Cloncurry in northern Queensland and Tibooburra and Collarenebri in New South Wales.

Ron and Deb Howse from Maller Pastoral Co offloaded a quality line of Simmental and Charolais cross steers fetching an average 384c/kg to weigh 385kg for a return of $1,481/hd as part of their annual turnoff.

Operating out of ‘Waverly’, the Wallumbilla based producers made 401c/kg for a pen of their Charolais cross steers weighing at 366kg for a return of $1,467/hd.

A further pen fetched 370c/kg weighing 420kg for an average return of $1,554/hd.

The line was consigned through PJH with agents Steven Goodhew and Ed Cross.

The Dray family Mitch and Peta with baby Elsie, Bryan and Pam Dray and Top X agent Carl Warren.

The Dray family from ‘Finsbury Park’ located northeast of Roma offloaded a large line of 178 Charolais cross steers as a part of their annual turnoff.

With three generations gracing the laneways/in attendance, the steers sold for an average 437c/kg to weigh 305/kg for a return of $1,335/hd.

A pen of Charolais cross steers sold under the hammer for 484c/kg to weigh 269kg for a return of $1,304/hd.

A further pen of fetched 454c/kg weighing in at 344kg to make $1,564/hd.

The line was consigned through Top X Roma.

BC Stinson from ‘Bonarby’ Mungallala offloaded a line of 64 EU accredited Santa Gertrudis cross and Angus cross steers to make 420c/kg weighing in at 325kg for an average return of $1,369/hd.

A pen of Angus cross steers fetched 428c/kg to weigh 336kg returning $1,439/hd.

A further pen of Santa Gertrudis cross steers made 414c/kg weighing 318kg for a return of $1,321/hd.

The line was consigned through Nutrien with livestock agent Charlie Dudgeon.

The Wallumbilla producers fetched 382c/kg to weigh 374kg for a return of $1,431/hd.

NLRS Commentary:

Roma Agents yarded 5990 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present. A mixed quality yarding penned including weaners heavy feeders and a small number of bullocks and cows. The market firm to dearer 5c to 10c/kg for the better lines of weaners. Bullocks and cows could not maintain the levels of last sale.

Yearling steers 200 to 280kg topped 484c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg made to 482c to average 415c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg with the majority selling from 300c to 428c/kg almost 10c/kg dearer. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg with a small number making 415c to feed and 390c/kg to restockers.

Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg with large numbers selling from 208c to 348c to average 315c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg topping 356c to average 319c/kg to restockers.  Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg improved almost 25c/kg to make 345c to feed and 364c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg and made to 306c/kg.

Grown steers 400 to 500kg topped 350c/kg to restockers. Grown steers over 600kg made to 335c/kg to processors. Grown heifers over 540kg also to processors made to 293c/kg Only a small number of cows penned with most cows losing yield. The 2 score cows sold from 185c to 240c/kg. The 3 score cows topped 275c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg made to 294c and bulls over 600kg making to 282c with a euro bull making to 311c/kg.

A total of 5,990 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 458c/kg and averaged 425c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 484c/kg and averaged 424c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 480c/kg and averaged 407c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 472c/kg and averaged 375c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 415c/kg and averaged 336c/kg.

Bongmuller Partnership, Finsbury Park, sold Charolais cross steers to 484c/kg, reaching a top of $1,564 to average $1,337.

Derbyshire Downs Pastoral Company Pty Ltd, Derbyshire Downs, Augathella, sold Angus cross steers to 480c/kg, reaching a top of $1,754 to average $1,519.  The Angus cross heifers sold to 346c/kg, reaching a top of $1,107 to average $971.

GT & Gay E Burey, Springhill, Amby sold Hereford cross steers to 450c/kg, reaching a top of $1,296 to average $1,211.

The D & R Kerwick Family Trust, Killarney, Miles sold Angus cross steers to 440c/kg, reaching a top of $1,448 to average $1,080.  The Angus cross heifers sold to 336c/kg, reaching a top of $1,040 to average $845.

Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 250c/kg and averaged 164c/kg. Cows in the 400-500kg range topped at 292c/kg, averaging 235c/kg. Cows in the 500-600kg range topped at 288c/kg, averaging 256c/kg. Cows over 600kg topped at 275c/kg, averaging 257c/kg.
