Roma store sale 16 July 2019: Demand firm for young cattle

A large panel of buyers was operating with an increased processor presence.

Cattle were drawn from a wider supply area. Yearling steers and heifers dominated the yarding and cows were present in increased numbers.

The overall quality was good however the featured lines of last week were absent.

Demand was firm for young cattle and processor competition was strong for cows.

Lightweight yearling steers under 280kg fell by 5c to 17c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg fell by 5c to 28c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to restockers rose by 4c/kg. Heavy weight yearling feeder steers fell by 1c/kg.

A large sample of lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers fell by 10c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed fell by 1c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows rose by 21c and the medium weight 3 score cows rose by 12c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows rose by 23c/kg.

The largest sample of lightweight yearling steers under 280kg sold to 305c to average 286c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 307.2c to average 287c/kg. The best of the medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed sold to 321.2c to average 295c while heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed sold to 300.2c to average 296c/kg. Lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers sold to 264.2c to average 248c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers made to 272.2c to average 256c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed sold to 275c to average 260c/kg.

The best of the limited numbers of grown steers sold to a top of 291.2c to average 290c/kg. A fair sample of grown heifers made to 265.2c to average 229c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows sold to 219.2c to average 206c while the medium weight 3 score cows sold to 247.2c to average 230c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to a top of 256.2c to average 244c/kg. The best of the medium weight bulls made to 292.2c to average 285c/kg.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 302c/kg and averaged 251c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 305c/kg and averaged 279c/kg.

Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 316c/kg and averaged 288c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 321c/kg and averaged 294c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 304c/kg and averaging 285c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $690/unit.

SD & MJ Russell, Wodonga, Mungallala sold Charolais cross steers to 311c/kg, reaching a top of $1,053 to average $933. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 254c/kg, reaching a top of $631 to average $631.

Glentulloch Grazing Co & KC Chandler, Glentulloch, Injune sold Simmental cross steers to 310c/kg, reaching a top of $1,080 to average $843.

AR & AG Anderson, East Sunrise, Injune sold Charolais cross steers to 307c/kg, reaching a top of $1,041 to average $854. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 263c/kg, reaching a top of $734 to average $683.
