Roma store sale 25 May 2021: Competition firm on quality cattle

Elders Mitchell agent Dave Phillips and vendors Sheryn and Laurie Hanna with a pen of LJ & SG Hanna heifers. The heifers sold to 476c/kg, reaching a top of $1,360 to average $1,348. The steers sold to 552c/kg, reaching a top of $1,980 to average $1,709.

Yarding 5747 Change -194

Cattle numbers continued to fall, down by 194 head to 5,747 head at the Roma Store Sale.

Cattle continue to be drawn from Western and North Western Queensland, along with the local supply area.

The overall quality of the yarding was mixed with steers accounting for over half of the yarding.

A large buying panel was present and operating, and included all regular processors with restockers continuing to be present in numbers.

Prices fluctuated across the mixed yarding, which included an increase in numbers of heavy steers, however competition remained firm on sought after lines of quality cattle.

Light weight yearling steers improved by 12c to 16c/kg. The lead of the medium weight steers under 280kg to feed improved by 12c, while the lead of the medium weight steers under 400kg fell in price by 2c to 16c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed fell by 17c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to restockers fell by 28c to 56c, while medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed improved by 13c/kg. Yearling heifers under 400kg to feed improved by 1c, and heavy weight heifers to feed improved by 5c/kg. Cows improved in price with heavy weights gaining 1c to 2c/kg.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg were again few in numbers and sold to a top of 596.2c to average 591c/kg. A good sample of light weight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 612.2c to average 548c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 588.2c to average 501c/kg. Yearling steers under 400kg to restockers made to 580.2c to average 494c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed reached a top of 467.2c to average 414c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a top of 556.2c to average 513c/kg.

Yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 568.2c to average 485c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 510.2c to average 456c/kg. Yearling heifers under 400kg to feed reached a top of 440.2c to average 425c/kg. The best of the grown steers sold to 381.2c to average 377c/kg. The largest sample of grown heifers sold to a top of 346.2c to average 328c/kg.

A pen of PTIC grown heifers sold on a dollars per head basis to $1740/head. Processor demand remained strong for cows as medium weight 3 score sold to 305.2c to average 299c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 305.2c to average 298c, while heavy weight 4 score cows reached a top of 316.2c to average 310c/kg. Light weight bulls to restockers sold to a top of 552.2c to average 477c/kg. The best of the heavy weight bulls made to 339.2c to average 332c/kg. Cows and calves reached a top of $2600/unit.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 612c/kg and averaged 554c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 602c/kg and averaged 539c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 588c/kg and averaged 489c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 580c/kg and averaged 461c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 515c/kg and averaging 405c/kg. Cows and calves hit $2,600/unit.
