Roma store sale 8 June 2021: Local heifers meet strong competition

Cattle continue to be drawn from a wide supply area.

The overall quality of the yarding was mixed and included good numbers of heavy steers and quality local weaners with steers and heifers presented in similar numbers.

A smaller but competitive buying panel was present and operating, with an increase in feedlot activity, and despite all regular processors being present, one did not operate.

Prices improved for medium to heavy weight steers along with most heifer categories. Heavy bulls continued to fall in price off the back of the decreased processor competition, while heavy weight cows held firm remaining unchanged from the previous week.

Light weight steers to restockers fell by 3c to 6c/kg. Medium weight steers to feed rose by 10c to 15c/kg. Medium weight steers under 400kg to restockers improved by 10c, while heavy weight steers to feed rose by 23c/kg.

A large run of local heifers sold to strong competition with light weight heifers to restockers improving by 91c to 113c/kg, and topping the sale. Medium weight heifers under 330kg to feed improved by 39c, while medium weight heifers under 400kg to feed fell by 23c/kg.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg remain present in limited numbers, and sold to a top of 600.2c to average 580c/kg. Yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 603.2c to average 550c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 562.2c to average 509c/kg. Yearling steers under 400kg to restockers made to 546.2c to average 498c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed reached a top of 481.2c to average 431c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a sale topping 654.2c to average 614c/kg. Yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 640.2c to average 569c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 552.2c to average 481c/kg. Yearling heifers under 400kg to feed reached a top of 488.2c to average 445c/kg.

The best of the grown steers sold to 360.2c to average 360c/kg. The largest sample of grown heifers sold to a top of 352.2c to average 341c/kg.

A run of PTIC heifers sold on a dollars per head basis to a top of $2,025/head. Cows were present in decreased numbers and restocker demand remained firm with medium weight cows selling to 290.2c to average 285c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 300.2c to average 292c/kg.

Light weight bulls to restockers sold to a top of 622.2c to average 570c/kg. The best of the small number of heavy weight bulls to processors made to 281.2c to average 274c/kg.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 600c/kg and averaged 524c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 603c/kg and averaged 548c/kg.

Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 546c/kg and averaged 494c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 524c/kg and averaged 458c/kg.

Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 481c/kg and averaging 418c/kg.

Gwenbrook Farms Pastoral Co, Gwenbrook, Roma sold Charolais cross steers to 578c/kg, reaching a top of $1,948 to average $1,686. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 588c/kg, reaching a top of $1,669 to average $1,464.
