Roma sale 18 Jan 2022: Mixed quality as yarding doubles

MOST of the yarding was made up of local medium weight yearling steers and heifers 280 to 400kg.

Light weight restocker steers and heifers were of a mixed quality this week and could not maintain the averages of the previous sale.

There was a large panel of restocker buyers that pushed feeders along on the medium weight steers leading to an increase of 10c to 20c/kg.

The addition of an export buyer saw finished grown steers and cows improve by 10c/kg, however most of the major exporters were not active again this week.

Light weight restocker steers under 280kg saw a top price of 818.2c to average 762c/kg. A large sample of restocker steers 280 to 330kg made to 784.2c averaging 742c/kg. Medium weight steers 330 to 400kg returning to the paddock sold to 734.2c, while those to feed made to 716.2 to average 675c/kg. Heavy weight feeder steers held firm to slightly cheaper selling to 600.2c to average 554c/kg.

Light weight restocker heifers under 200kg made to 806.2c, while the C muscle lines under 280kg averaged 697c/kg. Heifers 280 to 330kg returning to the paddock made to 742.2c to average 686c, while those to feed averaged 631c/kg. Feeder heifers over 330kg made to 680.2c to average 632c/kg.

Heavy grown steers over 600kg to the processor sold to 410.2c lifting 10c/kg.

Heavy weight store cows to restockers sold to good demand topping at 388.2c to average 371c/kg. Medium weight cows 400 to 520kg to export processors improved in price selling to 364.2c to average 334c/kg. Good heavy weight cows sold to 368.2 to average 339c, to improve in price by 11c/kg. Heavy weight bulls sold to 330.2 to average 306c/kg.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 812c/kg and averaged 696c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 818c/kg and averaged 741c/kg.

Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 784c/kg and averaged 719c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 716c/kg and averaged 622c/kg.

Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 600c/kg and averaging 530c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $3,300/unit.

KL Sharpe & DL Jones, Wardilla, Charleville sold Santa cross steers to 812c/kg reaching a top of $2,093 to average $1,813.
