Roma store 24 March 2020: Prices ease in second successive 8000 head yarding

The larger yardings continued at the Roma Store Sale with a total yarding of 8,032, down by only 3 head from the previous week.

Cattle were drawn from a wide supply area, with several large single vendor bred lines present, including cattle from South Australia, Blackall and Longreach, along with quality local lines.

A good panel of buyers was present and operating to firm demand. Steers and heifers were yarded in equal numbers, and an increased number of cows and calves were also yarded.

The overall quality of the yarding was good.

Prices mostly eased across all categories.

The limited numbers of light weight yearling steers under 200kg to restockers sold to a top of 466.2c to average 364c/kg. A large sample of light weight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 448.2c to average 409c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to feed sold a top of 420.2c to average 384c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed made to a top of 374.2c to average 367c/kg.

The good sample of light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers sold to a top of 386.2c to average 365c/kg. A large sample of medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed or background reached a top of 377.2c to average 335c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed made to a top of 370.2c to average 330c/kg.

There were limited numbers of grown steers yarded. The best of the grown heifers made to 305.2c to average 280c/kg. Medium weight 4 score cows sold to 272.2c to average 264c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 268.2c to average 261c/kg, while the 4 score heavy weight cows reached a top of 271c to average 266c/kg.

The largest sample of heavy weight bulls made to 310c to average 302c/kg.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 448c/kg and averaged 401c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 448c/kg and averaged 392c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 423c/kg and averaged 362c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 398c/kg and averaged 349c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 374c/kg and averaging 339c/kg. Cows and calves hit $1,940/unit.
