Roma store sale 1 Sept: Prices firm with strong competition for smaller yarding

Cattle were mostly drawn from the local supply area and the overall quality although mixed, included an increase in young light weight cattle and was improved from the previous week.

There was a smaller buying panel present and operating to strong competition on the smaller yarding, including all regular processors.

Prices remained firm and consistent across most categories, which saw average prices improve across most of the yarding despite not reaching the record top prices of recent weeks.

Processor competition increased for cows, while restocker activity on cows was limited.

Light weight yearling steers improved 4c to 43c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg fell by 3c to 8c/kg.

However medium weight yearling steers under 400kg improved in price by 11c to 14c/kg.

Light weight heifers under 200kg improved by 70c, while medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed improved by 18c/kg. Medium weight cows improved by 2c to 6c while heavy weight cows improved by 4c/kg.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg to restockers made to 496.2c to average 464c/kg. The largest sample of light weight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 485.2c to average 452c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 448.2c to average 438c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed also sold to 434.2c to average 406c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed made to a top of 394.2c to average 387c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a top of 480.2c to average 439c/kg. The largest sample of light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers also made to 460.2c to average 427c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed or background sold to 421.2c to average 411c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed also made to 421.2c to average 379c/kg.

The best of the small number of medium weight grown steers sold to 339.2c to average 332c/kg.

The best of the limited numbers of grown heifers sold to 312.2c to average 304c/kg. Medium weight 3 score cows sold to a top of 283.2c to average 273c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 280.2c to average 274c/kg.

The best of the heavy weight bulls made to 313.2c to average 294c/kg.

Vendor Maria Ridge, McGrath Breast Care Nurse Lisa Bowman and Elders Roma agent Shirley Ayers with the McGrath Foundation steer which sold for 386c/kg reaching $2,008. All proceeds from the sale of the steer will be donated to the McGrath Foundation.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 496c/kg and averaged 455c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 485c/kg and averaged 450c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 448c/kg and averaged 422c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 418c/kg and averaged 387c/kg.

Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 400c/kg and averaging 359c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $1,980/unit.
