Roma store sale 15 Sept 2020: Quality mixed in steer dominated yarding

GDL Roma agent Nick Shorten with a pen of Tully Family steers. The steers sold to 505c/kg, reaching a top of $1,414 to average $1,098.

CATTLE were drawn from a wide supply area and again included a large consignment from Julia Creek.

Steers dominated the yarding and the overall quality continued to be mixed.

There was a larger buying panel present, including all regular processors, and all were operating to strong demand on the reduced yarding.

Top end prices were improved across the categories, however final averages were reflective of the quality of the yarding.

Increased restocker competition saw light weight yearling steers under 280kg improve by 6c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg improved by 15c/kg.

Light weight weight heifers under 280kg to restockers remained unchanged, and medium weight heifers under 330kg to restockers improved by 13c/kg.

The increased processor buying panel resulted in solid improvements for cows, with medium weight cows gained 17c to 18c, and heavy weight cows improved by 18c to 32c/kg.

The small sample of light weight yearling steers under 200kg to restockers made to 506.2c to average 472c/kg. The largest sample of light weight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 498.2c to average 456c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 460.2c to average 430c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to restockers sold to 422.2c to average 400c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed made to a top of 420.2c to average 387c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a top of 466.2c to average 385c/kg. The largest sample of light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 458.2c to average 412c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed or background sold to 436.2c to average 423c/kg, while medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed also made to 422.2c to average 398c/kg.

A small pen of PTIC medium weight heifers sold to strong restocker competition to reach 493.2c to average 493c/kg.

The best of the medium weight grown steers to feed sold to 355.2c to average 330c/kg.

The best of the grown heifers to processors sold to 318.2c to average 300c/kg. Medium weight good condition cows sold to a top of 278.2c to average 273c/kg while heavy weight cows in good condition made to 284.2c to average 276c/kg. The best of the heavy weight bulls made to 295.2c to average 282c/kg.

Cows and calves reached a top of $1880/unit.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 506c/kg and averaged 461c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 498c/kg and averaged 434c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 460c/kg and averaged 401c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 420c/kg and averaged 378c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 420c/kg and averaging 341c/kg. Cows and calves hit $1,880/unit.
