Roma store 5 Dec 2017: Young cattle meet strong demand

Beef Central, 06/12/2017

Yarding 5692 Change -1740

The supply of stock was reduced by 23pc following the large yarding last week.

Cattle were drawn from a wide area of the state as well as the Northern Territory. A good panel of buyers was present and all were operating with one large consignment of vendor bred lines receiving very strong support.

A larger line up of better quality steer calves experienced a lift in price. All classes of yearling steers continued to meet strong demand from restockers and feeder operators. Light weight yearling heifers to restockers or backgrounders received some improvement in price. A small sample of heavy grown steers and bullocks sold to within a few cents of the previous week. The majority of the cows also experienced very little change in price, however the better heavy cows were marginally dearer.

Steer calves returning to the paddock made to a top of 426.2c with a fairly large sample averaging 398c, while the heifer calves reached 364.2c with most close to 359c/kg. Light weight yearling steers to restockers averaged 362c with a few pens to 388.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 317c and made to 346.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed averaged 294c with sales to 302.2c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers were well supplied and buyers absorbed the large number plus lifted average prices to 333c with sales to 362.2c/kg.

A handful of heavy grown steers made to 273.2c and a few plain condition bullocks averaged 260c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows averaged close to 209c and sold to 211.2c/kg. The best of the medium weights averaged 227c, while good heavy cows made to 236.2c to average 230c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 264.2c/kg.
