Beef Central, 30/04/2014

Weekly NLRS Roma Store Sale market commentary:

Yarding 13,206, Change 8356

Large numbers of cattle were trucked into the Roma Store Sale. The very large numbers attracted solid feedlot and restocker buyer competition in a generally good to fair quality yarding of cattle. Despite the big jump in yarding numbers, price averages held mostly firm week-on-week, with light weight yearling steers selling around 200c/kg. Secondary lines of D muscled light weight yearling steers met good restocker buyer competition and lifted 8c/kg. Feedlot buyers were very active on both medium and heavy weight yearling steers, while heavy weight yearling steers hit 202c/kg for those returning to the paddock. Light and medium weight yearling heifers were mixed in quality and price. Some cows were penned but majority were held over until the prime sale. Cows and calves sold $680/unit.

Light weight yearling steers sold to 225c and averaged 200c, down 2c, while plainer lines made to 181c and averaged 175c, up 8c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feedlot buyers sold to 208c and averaged 189c, down 3c, while those returning to the paddock hit 214c and averaged 201c, up 2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to 198c and averaged 185c, down 3c/kg. Those to restocker buyers earned to 202c and averaged 192c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to feed reached 186c and averaged 163c, unchanged in price, while those to southern processors topped at 170c and averaged 152c, down 13c/kg. The light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock hit 185c and averaged 158c, down 4c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed made to 182c and averaged 174c, up 8c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed hit 173c and averaged 165c/kg for the better quality lines.

The medium and heavy weight grown steers to feed sold between 174c and 177c/kg. Store conditioned cows sold between 85c and 106c with those to restocker buyers averaging 105c/kg. The medium weight 3 score cows to processors sold to 145c and averaged 134c/kg.
