Roma Store 13 Jan 2015: EYCI jumps 19.5c in one day

Beef Central, 13/01/2015
Large numbers of cattle buyers were at the first Roma Store Sale for 2015. Light weight weaner steers sold to 288c/kg, while a heavy weight feeder steer sold to 258c for 410kg to return $1058/head.

Large numbers of cattle buyers were at the first Roma Store Sale for 2015. Light weight weaner steers sold to 288c/kg, while a heavy weight feeder steer sold to 258c for 410kg to return $1058/head.

Restockers buoyed by recent rain competed en masse at Roma on Tuesday to push prices for weaner steers to rarely seen heights.

The market topped at 288c/kg for light weaners, a price veteran Roma agent Rod Turner believes is close to a record for the centre.

The strength of demand also had a dramatic impact on the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator, forcing it up by 19.5c on Tuesday to 434.75c.

The EYCI has now shot up by 58c since sales for the new year commenced last week.

“It was hot here today,” Rod Turner said after Roma’s sale on Tuesday.

“I have not seen so many people in the lanes chasing cattle for a long time.

“They have all had a bit of rain over Christmas and they have all got their confidence up, and they stepped up today and hooked into it.”

The top price was paid for a pen of 199kg Santa/Angus cross steers consigned by Morven cattle producers Peter and Marie Crook-King from Glenorie.

The steers returned $573/head, while a pen of 311kg Santa cross heifers from Glenorie sold for 240c/kg to return $748.

After three long years of drought and continuous mulga pulling and supplementary feeding with dry lick, today’s sale was welcome news for the family.

“We’re estatic,” Mrs Crook-King said following the sale.

“They were cattle we had kept, we would normally have sold them when we weaned back in June, but we kept them, and we decided to offload today.

“We were so happy to get a good sale today because we sold cattle late last year when the market wasn’t so good.

“It is just hard to believe that we got that price.”

Recent rain has triggered some herbage growth on Glenorie but Mrs Crook King said follow-up rain was still needed to grow grass and to run water.

After a long run of low prices she said it was a relief to see strength returning to the market.

“The prices have been low for a fair while now, a couple of years, so it is good to see it come back, whether it is sustainable or not, we don’t know.”

Mr Turner said the direction the market now takes will hinge on whether further rain falls.

“If it stops raining it will probably stay the same, but if we could just get a bit more rain it will keep going.”
