Roma store 1 May 2018: Wide quality spectrum in variable market

Numbers were the same as last week at Roma Store sale in a market that was full of assorted quality ranging from the drought affected cattle from NSW to lines of excellent assisted steers passed in with no bid. All buyers were in attendance or represented.

Calves topped at 368c to average 334c/kg. Drought affected yearling steers around 200kg topped at 332c to average 294c/kg. A large run of supreme yearling steers around 230kg to the restockers topped at 356c to average 311c/kg. 292c was the top money for yearling steers to feed to average 274c/kg.

Grown steers in lighter condition made to 270c/kg. Yearling heifers back to the paddock made to 304.2 to average 285c/kg. Grown heifers topped at 230c to average 218c/kg. Cows were generally easier with only a minority reaching over 200c with 207c/kg being the top money for quality finished cows to slaughter. 2 score store cows made to 180c to average 159c/kg in the largest sample for the restockers. The highest young bull price reached was 288c/kg most of which returned to the paddock however several went to live export.

Most buyers were in attendance or represented, operating in a widely ranging market with lots showing the effects of the dry season from Western Queensland and NSW through to quality feed assisted stock. There were around 2,000 steers, 3,000 heifers and just over 1,000 cows offered.

Calves made to 308c/kg. A large sample of steers under 200kg topped at 324c, to average 290c/kg. Steers in the 200-280kg range to restockers topped at 338c, to average 279c/kg. Quality yearling steers to feed reached 320c, to average 293c/kg. Yearling heifers less than 280kg topped at 310c, to average 244c/kg. Grown steers reached 246c and grown heifers made to 218c/kg.

2 score cows made 185c, to average 164c, while heavy weight cows to slaughter topped at 208c/kg. PTIC cows to the restockers topped at 218c/kg and cows with calves at foot made $1,725/unit. Restockers picked up young bulls up to 290c, to average 259c/kg and several around 450kg went to live export.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 362c/kg and averaged 324c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 356c/kg and averaged 298c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 314c/kg and averaged 282c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 290c/kg and averaged 268c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 280c/kg and averaging 262c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $1,060/unit.

Doonba Grazing Company, Doonba, Glenmorgan sold Angus cross steers for 356c/kg at 245kg returning $874/head. The Angus cross heifers sold for 275c/kg at 218kg returning $599/head.
GJ & RA Murphy, Koreelah, Charleville sold Charolais cross steers for 342c/kg at 220kg returning $752/head.
RD & SF Hoolihan, Elmsdale, Ilfracombe sold Angus cross steers for 321c/kg at 243kg returning $782/head.
Boyd KJ & SL, Kia Ora, Injune sold Charolais steers for 320c/kg at 277kg returning $888/head. The Charolais heifers sold for 260c/kg at 305kg returning $795/head.
Defiance Cattle Co, Roma sold Angus cross steers for 314c/kg at 321kg returning $1,010/head. The Angus cross heifers sold for 258c/kg at 267kg returning $689/head.

Mt Rourke Past Co, Mt Rourke, Winton sold Droughtmaster cross steers for 270c/kg at 445kg returning $1,202/head.

Heifers under 220kg topped at 318c/kg and average 265c/kg, while heifers in the 220 – 280kg range topped at 275c/kg and averaged 238c/kg. Heifers in the 280- 350kg range topped at 282c/kg, averaging 243c/kg. Heifers in the 350-450kg range topped at 282c/kg, averaging 228c/kg.

PD & TR Rauchle, Irongate Road, Pittsworth sold Simmental heifers for 282c/kg at 380kg returning $1,072/head.
Crichton Pastoral Co, Ivanhoe Downs, Morven sold Charolais cross heifers for 245c/kg at 374kg returning $917/head.
PL & MA Crook-King, Glenorie, Morven sold Angus cross heifers at 268c/kg for 210kg returning $563/head.

Cows in the 300-400kg range reached 200c/kg and averaged 137c/kg, while cows in the 400kg-500kg range reached 204c/kg and averaged 169c/kg. Cows over 500kg topped at 207c/kg, averaging 189c/kg.

Bulls under 400kg topped at 288c/kg and averaged 224c/kg, while bulls in the 400 – 600kg range topped at 237c/kg and averaged 205c/kg. Bulls over 600kg topped at 246c/kg, averaging 222c/kg.
