Online markets show revitalised restocker demand

YOUNG cattle prices continued to surge in online trading platforms this week.

The inaugural Stocklive online cattle auction was completed this morning, with a 100pc clearance of seven lots totalling around 460 head.

Thirty five registered bidders were logged on for the inaugural sale, with selling done-and-dusted by 11.20am. Buyers included processors, restockers and lotfeeders. The next fortnightly sale starts 20 November.

Highlights included:

  • 80 Angus feeder steers 423kg at 14-16 months from Walcha NSW that made $2040 (482c/kg)
  • 75 Angus feeder steers 459kg at 14-16 months from Binnalong NSW that made $2295 that made 500c/kg
  • 40 Angus backgrounder steers 381kg at 12-16 months from Holbrook NSW selling for $1900 or 499c/kg
  • 62 Angus backgrounder steers 318kg at 12-14 months from Holbrook NSW selling for $1710 or 538c/kg
  • 89 Ultrablack PTIC cows 498kg at 3 years from Blackall QLD attracting seven bids and selling for $2300
  • 28 Angus NSM cows & calves from Tamworth NSW, cows 729kg at 5-7 years selling for $3200

On Auctions Plus sales held today, most steer and heifer categories continued to advance in c/kg price, while breeding females also showed positive movement. Clearance at 86pc was down 7pc on last week.

The offering lifted 9pc on the previous week to 9293 head.

The Weaner and Yearling Sale closed with 90pc clearance. Market strength was underpinned by a sharp rise in processor activity, with the processor purchase rate jumping to 22pc, more than doubling last week’s figure.

Among the large steer offerings, steers 330-400kg lifted 4c to average 513c/kg, clearing 86pc of the offering of 1121 head. Feeder steers +400kg lost 1c to average 492c, clearing 86pc of the offering of 936 head.

Biggest improvers were steers 280-330kg which lifted 55c/kg to average 564c, clearing almost all of the 873 head offering.

From Braidwood, NSW, 94 Angus steers 12-13 months averaging 354kg returned 577c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Gundagai, NSW.

Ninety Angus steers 13-14 months averaging 285kg from Bundella, NSW returned 662c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Walcha, NSW.

Among the heifers, rises were seen in three of the four active categories. Heavy heifers +400kg improved 16c to average 479c, clearing 97pc of the 700 head offered.

Heifers 330-400kg lost 7c to average 467c, also clearing 97pc of the 911 head offered.

Breeding females

Among breeding stock, non-station-mated cows and calves surged $710/pair to average $2950, and station-mated cows and calves lifted $162/pair to reach $2803.

Losing ground were NSM heifers & calves, back $293 to average $2759.

From Tarcutta, NSW, 72 Angus PTIC heifers 18-20 months averaging 418kg returned $2310/head and will travel to a buyer near Naracoorte, SA.
