Lighter steer prices lift on AuctionsPlus

ONGOING adverse seasonal conditions have again been reflected in online livestock trading on AuctionsPlus this week. A total of 9545 cattle were listed, down about 20pc from last week’s 12,000 head, with clearance rates declining.

Weaners and yearlings made up the vast majority of the offering, with 6000 head available. Grown cattle were in tight supply, and did not witness any increase in clearance, as expected in ongoing dry conditions.

PTIC cows and heifers sold from $800 to $1700 this week to average $1079. Prices are firm on last week, and supply continues to outweigh demand for the time being. All cattle sold were located in NSW and VIC, and all will remain in these two states.

From Trafalgar, VIC, a line of two-year-old PTIC Angus heifers joined to Te Mania bulls made the top price of $1700, selling to a buyer in Warragul, VIC. The top price out of NSW was $1010, and went to a line of PTIC Angus cows 6-8 years from Cooma, joined to Angus bulls. The cows will remain in Cooma.

Cows with calves at foot were once again in tight supply, with 376 head being offered and a 77pc clearance being found. Prices ranged from $1000 to $2020 to average $1451, up $311 on last week.

From Peterborough, VIC, a line of three year old Angus cows with 4-5 month old calves at foot made the top price of $2020. They will head to Hamilton, VIC. From Walcha, NSW, a line of 33 Angus cows and calves sold for $1550 to a buyer from Roma, QLD. The cows have Kilburnie, Ben Nevis and Speriby North blood and were sold with 4-6 month old calves at foot.

Light steers under 200kg sold from 256-320c, to average 290c. Demand for the lighter category has risen on last week, with six lots selling compared to last week’s one. Top price went a line of Angus weaner steers 194kg at 8-10 months, from Tenterfield, NSW, heading to Deer Vale, NSW.

Selling from 266c to 377c this week, steers 200-280kg averaged 317c, up 13c on last week. From Killawarra, VIC, a line of Angus weaner steers 275kg found the top price, heading to Benalla, VIC.

In Queensland, prices topped at 300c/kg for a line of Angus backgrounder steers from Millmerran, 6-9 months, making the long journey to Casterton, VIC.

Steers 280-330kg sold from 271-364c this week to average 322c, down 5c on last week. Highlights included Shorthorn weaned steers 310 kg from Goondiwindi, QLD and selling for 310c to a buyer in Casterton, VIC, and Angus weaned steers 313kg from Mangoplah, NSW selling for 365c to a buyer in Korumburra, VIC.

Steers 330kg and heavier sold from 292-353c this week to average 327c, up 1c on last week. Top price went to Angus feeders steers 341kg at 12-14 months from Orange, NSW, which will cross the border to Burra, SA.

Lighter heifers less than 200kg returned from 224-275c, averaging 246c, down 27c. A line of Simmental weaned heifers 6-7 months from Warren, NSW found the top price, heading to Shepparton, VIC.

Heifers 280-330kg averaged 284c and sold from 240c to 330c. A line of Speckle Park NSM future breeders 321kg at 10-12 months from Yeoval, NSW found the top price, from a buyer in Casterton, VIC.

Heavier heifers weighing 330kg and over averaged 295c, down 2c on last week and sold from 252-326c. Highlights included 48 Angus heifers 472kg at 11-12 months from Bingara, NSW, heading across the border to Drouin East, VIC.

This week’s Tasmanian cattle sale produced a 100pc clearance for the six lots on offer. The auction has 33 bidders log in, with 76 bids being placed, and produced a top price of $1220 for a line of backgrounder steers 342 kg from Sassafras, making 356c/kg live.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weightrange:

  • Under 200kg: Steers sold from 256-320c to average 289c, while heifers sold from 224-275c to average 246c
  • 200-280kg: Steers sold from 266-378c to average 324c, while heifers sold from 226-556c to average 272c
  • 280-330kg: Steers sold from 272-365c to average 322c, while heifers sold from 241-330c to average 284c
  • 330-400kg: Steers sold from 292-356c to average 334c, while heifers sold from 252-317c to average 288c
  • 400+ kg: Steers sold from 310-338c to average 324c, while heifers sold from 323-326c to average 324c
