Heifer prices lift in smaller AuctionsPlus offering

Light steers less than 200kg averaged 309c on AuctionsPlus this week, up 45c. Top price went to these Angus steers 5-6 months averaging 163kg from Cobungra Station, Omeo, VIC selling for 371c or $604. They were part of an offering of 370 EU-eligible weaner steers and heifers offered by Cobungra in five lots selling from 320-371c.

Cattle numbers offered on AuctionsPlus declined further this week falling seven  percent to 5933 head.

Buyer demand was strong with the decrease of numbers, with clearance rates hitting 75 percent.

Cows with calves at foot made up the majority of this week’s listings with just shy of 1500 units listed, while  yearling and grown heifer numbers recorded 1175 head and 1131 weaner steers were on offer.

Demand for cow and calf units continued to remain strong with a 70pc clearance. Prices ranged from $560 to $1760 and averaged $1243. Top price went to a small line of three-year-old Shorthorn cows averaging 546kg, with Shorthorn calves at foot, from Rutherglen, VIC.

Other highlights included a line of three-year-old Angus cows averaging 512kg, with Angus calves at foot, from Merriwa NSW selling for $1660; 2-3-year-old joined Angus cows, 512kg, with Angus calves at foot, from Moonan Flat, NSW selling for $1530.

Older cows sold well with a line of seven-year-old Angus cows, 552kg, with Angus calves at foot from Gundagai, NSW selling for $1480.

Prices for steers 200-280kg averaged 296c this week, down 3c. Top price went to Simmental x Angus steers, 7-8 months averaging 229kg from Tarcutta, NSW which sold for 332c or $760. Other highlights include Angus steers 250kg from Armidale, NSW selling for 328c; and Angus steers 247kg from Barnawartha, VIC selling for 320c.

Steers 280-330kg averaged 301c this week, up 5c. Top price went to Angus and Angus cross steers, 10-11 months old averaging 314kg from Jingellic, NSW which sold for 333c or $1045. Other highlights include Angus steers 326kg from Ararat, VIC selling for 328c; and Angus and Angus cross steers 322kg from Sidonia, VIC selling for 328c.

Light heifers weighing less than 200kg averaged 291c this week, down 34c. Top price went to Angus and Angus cross heifers, 5-6 months averaging 155kg from Omeo, VIC, selling for 343c or $533. Other highlights include Charolais x Shorthorn cross heifers 151kg from Gloucester, NSW selling for 269c; and Angus heifers 185kg from Glen Innes, NSW selling for 264c.

Heifers weighing 200–280kg averaged 266c this week, up 4c. Top price went to a line of Angus heifers, 13-14 months averaging 275kg from Walcha, NSW which sold for 305c or $840. Other highlights include Angus heifers 242kg from Barnawartha, VIC selling for 301c; and Angus heifers 225kg from Guyra, NSW selling for 291c.

Heifers 280–330kg averaged 270c this week, down 10c. Top price went to a line of Angus heifers, 12-13 months averaging 312kg from Harden, NSW which sold for 297c or $925. Other highlights include Santa heifers 329kg from Glenmorgan, QLD selling for 265c; and Angus x Santa heifers 311kg from Dundee, NSW selling for 256c.

Heifers more than 330kg averaged 280c this week, down 5c. Top price went to Angus heifers 10-12 months averaging 365kg from Yass NSW, which sold for 291c or $1060. Other highlights included Angus heifers 334kg from Walcha NSW, selling for 289c; and Hereford heifers 254kg from Nevertire, NSW selling for 254c.

In Western Australia, Angus and Angus cross heifers, 12-14 months averaging 239kg dressed from Mayanup WA sold for 545c or $1302. Angus and Angus cross steers, 12-14 months averaging 476kg from the same property sold for $1442 or 303c. Angus and Angus cross mixed sex yearlings 14-19 months averaging an estimated 267kg dressed from Pemberton, WA sold for 540c/kg dressed.

In Tasmania, Angus steers, 9-11 months old averaging 261kg from Judbury sold for 383c or $1000. From the same vendor a line of 255kg heifers sold for 342c or $870.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weightrange:

Under 200kg: Steers sold from 238c to 371c to average 309c, while heifers sold from 245c to 343c to average 290c

200-280kg: Steers sold from 218c to 332c to average 295c, while heifers sold from 187c to 305c to average 264c

280-330kg: Steers sold from 241c to 333c to average 301c, while heifers sold from 228c to 297c to average 270c

330-400kg: Steers sold at 216c, while heifers sold from 254c to 291c to average 280c

400+kg: Steers sold at 303c, while heifers sold from 292c to 295c to average 292c
