Heavier steer values rise in larger AuctionsPlus offering

These 61 Shorthorn weaned steers 9-12 months averaging 333kg from Wombat, NSW made 318c or $1060/head this week.

NUMBERS offered on AuctionsPlus this week increased by 430 head, to reach a total listing of 6300 head. The majority of stock listed came out of the Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes and Plains of NSW, with significant numbers flowing into the Southern Tablelands and South West Victoria.

Cow and calf units this week saw 1441 head offered, with clearance remaining strong at 70pc. Prices ranged from $510 to $1860, with the average price increasing $23 to $1133.

https://www.nh-foods.com.au/Top price was achieved by a line of 15 two-year-old Angus cows and calves from Everton, VIC. Other highlights include a line of rising four-year-old Angus cows with calves at foot from Bingara, NSW returning $1500, heading to a buyer in Southern Queensland. Glenfern Investments from Forbes, NSW offered four lines of Te Mania Angus blood cows and calves, with the younger 3-4 year old cows making $2100 and the older lines $1900 and $1950.

In this week’s WA cattle sale, a line of Angus/Friesian mixed sex yearlings 12-14 months averaging 349 kg from Northcliffe sold for $980. In Pemberton, 64 Angus mixed sex yearlings 463kg at 14-16 months made 542c/kg dressed.

Light steers less than 200kg averaged 306c this week, down 3c on last week. A line of 6-10 month old Shorthorn steers, 159kg, from Warren, NSW returned the top price of 339c.

Prices for steers weighing 200-280kg were down on last week, averaging 287c, a drop of 9c. Top price of 339c went to a line of 37 Angus weaners from Book Book, NSW averaging 236kg. Another highlight was 11-12 month old Angus backgrounder steers 267kg from Avoca, TAS, offered over two lots which sold for 332c.

Heavier steers 280-330kg averaged 301c this week, and ranged from 277-333c. Top price went to a line of 12-13 month old Angus steers 311kg from Legerwood, TAS. In Victoria, 70 Angus weaned steers from Stonyford, 13-14 months old averaging 297kg sold for 314c.

Heavier steers 330-400kg averaged 300c this week and ranged from 260-326c. Top price was paid for a line of 12-13 month old Angus yearling steers from Grassmere, VIC, while 61 Shorthorn weaned steers 9-12 months averaging 333kg from Wombat, NSW made 318c or $1060/head.

Heifer offerings

Light heifers less than 200kg averaged 249c this week and ranged from 220-274c. Top price went to a line of 6-10 month old Shorthorn heifers, 171kg from Warren, NSW. Heifers 200-280kg averaged 235c this week, and ranged from 187-307c. Top price went to 20 Angus backgrounder heifers 11-12 months averaging 243kg from Bridport, TAS.

Heifers 280-330kg averaged 269c, down 1c on last week. Top price went to a line of 81 Angus cross feeder heifers from Tenterfield, NSW which sold for 287c. The heifers were aged 18-22 months, averaged 311kg and are heading to a buyer in Gippsland, VIC.

Another highlight included 12-14 month old Angus heifers 284kg from Merriwa, NSW, which returned 274c.

Heavier heifers 330-400kg averaged 281c this week and ranged from 262-308c. Top price went to a line of Charolais cross weaned heifers 11-12 months averaging 309kg, from Pipers River, TAS.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weight range:

  • Under 200kg: Steers sold from 244-339c to average 307c, while heifers sold from 220-274c to average 249c
  • 200-280kg: Steers sold from 210-339c to average 287c, while heifers sold from 187-308c to average 235c
  • 280-330kg: Steers sold from 277-333c to average 302c, while heifers sold from 250-287c to average 270c
  • 330-400kg: Steers sold from 260-326c to average 300c, while heifers sold from 262-309c to average 281c
  • 400+kg: Steers sold for 327c, while heifers sold from 296-307c to average 302c
