Dubbo sale 1 June 2017: Plainer quality affects grown steer market

Numbers lifted by 650 for a yarding of 4240.

Trade cattle were mostly firm, demand for feeders varied with lighter types up to 5c dearer and heavier weights falling by up to 6c; while steers to restockers were firm to 3c cheaper depending on weight and quality. Grown steers were 10c cheaper with the plainer quality available having an effect in the fall.

It was a fair quality yarding with a good selection of cows and young cattle to suit the feeder orders along with fair numbers to suit the trade.

The quality of the grown steers was not to the standard of previous sales with a number of the grown steers coming in from the far west and presenting in forward condition.

Consignments came from far and wide with a four separate lots coming in from the Broken Hill area along with cattle coming in from Bourke Wanaaring the South Australian border Brewarrina Tibooburra Boggabri along with the usual local lots.

All the regular buyers were in attendance and operating in a fairly solid market.

MLA market information advises that the trade cattle mostly sold at similar rates to the previous sale. The prime steer vealers sold from 330c to 386c while the prime heifer vealers sold from 320c to 351c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 293c to 351c with the heavier weights weighing over 400kg averaging 319c/kg. The prime heifer yearlings to the trade sold from 287c to 348c with the medium weights weighing 330kg to 400kg averaging 342c/kg.

Demand for the feeders varied with the lighter weights selling at firm to 5c dearer rates and the prime heavier weights falling by 6c/kg. The feeder steers sold from 288c to 378c with the prime heavy weights over 400kg averaging 323c while the feeder heifers sold from 298c to 350c with the lighter weights averaging 328c/kg.

Young steers to the restockers were firm to 3c cheaper depending on weight and quality. The young steers going back to the paddock sold from 322c to 392c with the lightweights weighing less than 280kg averaging 372c/kg. Young heifers to the restockers sold from 318c to 371c/kg.

Grown steers were 10c cheaper with the plainer quality available having an effect in the fall. The lighter weight steers weighing between 400kg and 500kg sold from 260c to 315c while the prime medium weights weighing between 500kg and 600kg sold from 288c to 312c to average 303c/kg. Export weight feeder steers sold from 264c to 330c/kg. Grown heifers were 5c cheaper on average but still finished selling to 305c with the prime heavy weights averaging 289c/kg.

Demand for the cows was very solid with a tally up of the cow buyers present and operating totalling 14.Cows were up to 6c dearer with the 2 scores selling from 140c to 230c to the processors. The restockers paid from 230c to 245c/kg. The better 3 and 4 score cows to the processors sold from 215c to 260c with the prime heavy weights averaging 248c/kg. Two very well finished Limousin C muscle cows topped at 266c/kg.

Bulls were a little dearer with the properly finished well muscled heavy weights selling from 245c to 284c/kg. With all of the far western consignments there were good numbers of young bulls suitable for the restockers and they sold from 276c to 332c with the lighter weights less than 450kg averaging 313c/kg.
