Dalby Sale 21 March: Rates come back with variable yarding

Beef Central, 22/03/2018

Yarding 5461 Change -2553

The supply of stock reduced by 46pc following the very large yarding the previous week and also included in the line-up were 120 cow and calf units. There was a wide variation in the standard of the young cattle while a good quality line-up of heavy grown steers, bullocks and cows came forward. Young light weight yearling steers and heifers experienced very strong support from restockers and backgrounders. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 9c cheaper and a very large sample of heavy weight yearling steers to feed only averaged 4c/kg easier. However export slaughter lines experienced the largest reduction with heavy grown steers and bullocks 16c to 18c/kg cheaper. This trend also flowed onto the cows which eased 15c to 20c/kg.

A large selection of light weight yearling steers returned to the paddock at an average of 364c with some to 384.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 299c and made to 312.2c with a fair sample returning to the paddock reaching 315.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed were well supplied and made to 300c to average 292c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to restockers or background averaged 314c and made to 326.2c while lesser quality lines averaged 267c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 275c and made to 281.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 265c and some to the trade averaged 262c and made to 271.2c/kg.

Medium weight grown steers sold to feeder operators averaged 282c with one large run making to 285.2c/kg. Heavy grown steers to export slaughter made to 278.2c to average 272c/kg. Some very well presented supplementary fed bullocks made to 284.2c to average 282c while the remainder mostly sold around 271c with sales to 278.2c/kg. Medium weight 3 score cows averaged 198c and the best of the medium weights made to 216.2c to average 209c/kg. Good heavy cows made to 221.2c to average 217c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 263.2c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long report:

5461 cattle were yarded in Dalby today which saw consignments from Cameron’s Corner, Walgett NSW, Blackall as well as the local area.  The yarding consisted of very good lines of heavy bullocks and cows.  With rainfall easing in the past few weeks and plenty of well-presented cattle on offer, the prices eased across all classes.  Bullocks eased 16c to 18c and cows were 20c cheaper.  Medium weight feeder steers were the least affected back 5c.  Lightweight yearling steers and heifers to re-stockers were back 10c to 15c with a smaller mixed quality line up. – Jordan Wenham, GDL Dalby
