Dalby Sale 8 Aug 2018: Prices firm on good quality cattle

James Nason, 09/08/2018

Video market report from Ray White Eastern Rural’s Wyatt Wrigley

Yarding 2928 Change -1519

Overall quality was very mixed and cattle were drawn from a wide area including far western Queensland.

Export buyer attendance was good, however not all were operating. Feeder buyer activity was generally strong while restocker support was very subdued.

Prices varied according to quality with well-bred lines generally in demand, however light weight young cattle from drought affected areas sold to a very difficult market.

The better end of the light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock sold to a firm market while lesser quality lines were cheaper. A small sample of heavy steers to feed averaged 3c/kg better.

Light weight yearling heifers averaged 14c to 20c/kg less.

Medium and heavy weights yearling heifers to feed improved in price. The small selection of heavy grown steers and bullocks allowed average prices to improve. The plain condition cows experienced some small improvements while the better condition classes sold to within a few cents of the previous sale. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock averaged 271c and made to 286.2c, while poor quality lines averaged 235c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 264c and made to 274.2c and heavy weights averaged 291c and sold to 294.2c/kg.

The largest numbers of light weight yearling heifers averaged 200c and sold to 225.2c, while drought affected lines made from 123c to 150c/kg.

Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 232c and heavy weights made to 270c to average 257c/kg. Heavy grown steers to export slaughter made to 269.2c to average 264c and a small selection of bullocks made to 275.2c to average close to 271c/kg.

Medium weight poor condition cows made from 125c to 156.2c and the 2 scores averaged 170c/kg. A fair sample of good heavy cows made to 220.2c to average 208c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 250c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long report:

A smaller yarding today saw prices stay firm on good quality cattle.

There were a couple of larger lines of cattle come out of Blackall and Wandoan for today’s sale.

The ongoing dry weather saw lighter cattle from the cow’s right through to weaner heifer’s struggle, which meant prices dropped.

Cows made 220c and bullocks made up to 275.2c. – Tim O’Dwyer, GDL, Dalby
