Dalby sale 2 Sep 2020: Strong support for light cattle

Beef Central, 03/09/2020

Click above for video market report from Peter Bird of Eastern Rural.

The overall quality was not up to the standard of the previous week.

A full panel of export buyers was present with the return of one major export processor, plus the usual feed and trade buyers, and local and interstate restockers. Very light weight yearling steers and heifers to restockers continued to received strong support.

The remainder of the young cattle could not maintain the levels of the previous sale with losses of 20c/kg, however half of the reduction in price was quality related. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed for the domestic market went against this trend to average 6c/kg better. Cows returning to the paddock received very strong support from local and interstate restockers. However despite the return to a full panel of exporters cows to processors experienced very little change in price. Yearling steers under 200kg returning to the paddock made to 566.2c to average 508c/kg. Light weight yearling steers under 280kg averaged 443c with sales to 514.2c/kg. Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market made to 438c to average from 409c to 421c/kg.

A relatively small selection of heavy weight yearling steers to feed averaged 385c and made to 390c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg made to 472c to average 444c/kg. Yearling heifers under 280kg averaged 424c and made to 460c/kg. Yearling heifers to feed made to 428c to average from 405c to 412c/kg. The annual sale of a pen of certified grainfed steers, with half of the proceeds going to the Royal Flying Doctors Service made to 352.2c/kg to return $2,005/head. Medium weight store condition cows returning to the paddock made to 274.2c to average 270c/kg.

Good heavy weight cows to processors averaged 279c and made to 288c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 319c/kg.
