Dalby Sale 17 Oct 2018: Solid gains on rain

Buyer attendance was generally good and most were active across all classes.

Prices generally improved for the young light weight lines pushed on by much stronger restocker demand.

Steer calves gained 38c and heifer calves improved by 70c/kg. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock averaged 18c/kg dearer. Medium weight yearling steers to feed lifted by 7c and heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed averaged 11c to 15c/kg better. Light weight yearling heifers averaged 24c/kg dearer and medium weight yearling heifers to feed experienced very little change. Heavy grown steers and bullocks generally sold close to the previous weeks’ level.

However, poor condition cows to restockers lifted by 20c to 40c/kg. Medium weight 2 scores to processors averaged 3c less, while the better end of the cows averaged 5c/kg dearer. Steer calves returning to the paddock made to 334.2c and heifer calves made to 284.2c/kg.

A good sample of light weight yearling steers sold to restockers at an average of 307c with some to 328.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 291c and made to 311.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed mostly sold in the mid-to high 290c range with sales to 305.2c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers to restockers or background averaged 272c and made to 284.2c, while some went on to make future breeders at 328.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed made to 290.2c to average 281c/kg. Local trade lines reached 292.2c to average 278c/kg. Heavy grown steers and bullocks generally sold in the mid-to high 290c range with the occasional pen reaching 314.2c/kg. Plain condition cows returned to the paddock at 199c and made to 211.2c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows to processors averaged 203c and made to 220c/kg. Good heavy cows mostly sold around 259c with isolated sales to 273.2c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 267.2c/kg.

With a wet muddy saleyard from the much needed rain the Dalby Cattle Market was running red hot.

The yarding this week was made up of cattle from Windorah, Blackall, Taroom, Meandarra, Moonie and Kingaroy.

342 top quality weaner heifers, vendor bred A/c of The Arrabury Pastoral Co. made up to 280c.

Good quality cows increased by 10 to 15c topping at 273.2c, bullocks made 307.2c and bulls made up to 268.2c. Tim O’Dwyer, GDL Dalby
