Dalby sale 14 June 2017: Feeder buyers add competition

Beef Central, 15/06/2017

Yarding 5563 Change 953

The supply of stock increased by close to 1,000 head and a large group of buyers was present and operating and included some additional buyers in the feeder sections.

Restockers and backgrounders were very active on the light weight yearling steers and heifers and light weight yearling steers averaged 2c dearer however the heifer portion improved by 11c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed continued to receive strong competition. The heavy weight yearling steers to feed averaged 13c/kg better while a good sample of medium weight grown steers to feed were noticeably dearer. A larger number of heavy grown steers and bullocks to export slaughter allowed average prices to ease by 4c to 7c/kg. Prices for the better end of the cows remained close to firm while the plain condition lines were marginally dearer.

Steer calves returning to the paddock made to a top of 432.2c with a large sample of mixed sex calves averaging 381c/kg. Light weight yearling steers to restockers made to 431.2c with a large selection averaging 373c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed made to 360c with most around 342c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to an isolated 350.2c to average 332c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers were well supplied and most sold around 345c with sales to 364.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 318c and made to 336.2c/kg.

A fair sample of 4 tooth steers in the mid-450kg range to feed made to 322.2c/kg. Heavy grown steers to export slaughter made to 305.2c to average 299c and most of the bullocks sold around 297c with sales to 307.2c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 214c and made to 220.2c and the best of the medium weights made to 247.2c to average 234c/kg. A fairly large sample of good heavy cows made to a top of 255c to average 245c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 274.2c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long’s Joe Lehman said the yarding was similar to previous weeks, with good attendance of buyers, and some very good lines of cows and weaners.

“The market was solid with good lines of weaners, with the better quality being dearer.”

A highlight was 20 Droughtmaster cross cows and calves in light condition from St George which sold for $1380/per head.
