Yarding 7417 Change 2541

Numbers climbed to the highest level since September 2015 and also included in the much larger line up was over 1000 head from South Australia, plus 2,300 head from far Western Queensland. Despite the larger number penned prices for young light weight cattle generally sold to strong demand with only small variations in places due to quality. Medium weight yearling steers to feed sold close to firm, while a small number of heavy weight yearling steers to feed improved in places. The very large number of yearling heifers penned allowed average prices to vary, however good quality lines continued to be in demand. The plainer end of the heavy grown steers and bullocks were cheaper, while good quality lines experience very little change in price. Cows lost some of the previous weeks’ gains to average 8c to 14c/kg less.

Steer calves to restockers made to 370.2c, a large number averaging 350c, while heifer calves mostly sold around 284c, with some to 312.2c/kg. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock made to 340.2c to average 323c, while lesser quality lines averaged 289c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed made to 305.2c to average 288c and heavy weight yearling steers to feed mostly sold from 275c to 284c with a few to 290.2c/kg. The largest numbers of light weight yearling heifers mostly sold in the mid-to high 270c range with some to restockers reaching 306.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 277c and made to 285.2c/kg. Heavy weights to feed averaged 258c and slaughter lines averaged 259c and made to 272.2c/kg.

Heavy grown steers to export slaughter averaged 269c and made to 275.2c, while a fair sample of bullocks made to 278.2c to average 271c/kg. A good sample of plain condition cows returned to the paddock at an average of 208c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows to export processors averaged 195c and the best of the medium weights made to 220c to average 213c/kg. A large sample of good heavy cows averaged 217c and made to 221.2c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 260c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long report:

It was the biggest yarding since September 2015 at the Dalby Saleyards. At least 30pc of the cattle yarded extended from Cameron’s Corner as well as Windorah and Birdsville, all were light condition and met strong competition. The market was firm, except for heavy cows were down by 10c.

Agents, buyers and spectators all commented what a difference the new roof made in the extreme heat conditions for the cattle yarded.
