Dalby sale 21 Feb 2024: Numbers back to 4671

Trevor Hess, NLRS 22/02/2024

Yarding 4671 Change -1886

Following two weeks of high cattle numbers at Dalby supply dropped this week by 1,886 head to 4,671.

Buyer attendance continues to be good with representatives covering all categories.

Prices experienced mixed results as buyers were very selective.

Well bred very light weight yearling steers to restockers improved in price. However most yearling steers to feed could not maintain the levels of the previous sale and lost 4c to 7c/kg. This trend flowed onto the yearling heifers with only well bred lines in demand. Heavy grown steers and bullocks to export processors sold to within a few cents of the previous week. Prices for cows were firm to 2c to 4c/kg less. Light weight yearling steers under 200kg made to 550c average 453c/kg.

Yearling steers under 280kg returning to the paddock made to 500c to average 436c and poor lines 334c/kg. Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market averaged from 370c to 395c with a very occasional sale to 446c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to 379c to average 355c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to restockers made to 348c to average 312c poor quality lines 245c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged from 300c to 308c the very occasional sale to 340c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed made to 338c to average 309c/kg. Heavy grown steers to export processors made to 319c and the bullock portion made to 315c average 306c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 227c and 3 scores 248c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 257c to average 249c/kg. The best of the heavy weight cows made to 271c to average 264c/kg.

Heavy weight bulls made to 302c/kg.

Cows and calves $1,675/unit.

Grant Daniel Long report:

Smaller yarding in Dalby this week with the usual panel of buyers in attendance and operating. Overall, the market was very similar to last week, with the top lines of cattle being firm, otherwise prices were back generally around 5c/kg in most categories. Following last week’s trend, second class and plainer cattle are selling for reduced rates.
