Trevor Hess, NLRS, 03/08/2023

Yarding 5005 Change + 759

Cattle numbers at Dalby increased by 759 head to 5005. Export buyer attendance was good with all the regular and interstate operators active in the market along with the usual feed and trade plus restocker buyers.

Well bred young cattle experienced good demand however a small reduction in quality resulted in a large fall in price. Light weight yearling steers and heifers to restockers received a small improvement against the large loss the previous week. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed averaged 2c/kg better. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 10c/kg dearer.

A lift in the standard of the bullocks improved average prices by 15c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows sold close to the previous weeks large lift in prices. Heavy weight cows averaged 8c/kg dearer. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock average 324c and sold 374c and poor quality lines at 229c/kg. Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market averaged from 322c to 338c with sales to 358c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to 354c to average 339c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers to restockers made to 254c to average 223c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed made to 328c to average 297c and heavy weights made to a top of 334c to average 287c/kg. Bullocks made to 315c to average 303c/kg. Grant Daniel Long Report:

The usual panel of buyers were present and active with one southern processor operating as well. Overall, the market was very similar to last week, heavy cows saw a slight increase in prices of around 5c/kg, the better pens of lightweight yearling heifers and heavy feeder heifers sold consistently at the higher end of last week’s prices. Bullocks also averaged better this week, selling around the 300c/kg mark throughout the day. A few of the changes in prices on the day were quality related, second grade cattle sold to a tough market and better lines were firm or better.
