Trevor Hess, NLRS 11/01/2024

Yarding 1151 Change -3403

Cattle numbers for the opening market at Dalby remained relatively low at 1,151 head. Only a handful from far Western Queensland plus 199 from New South Wales with the remainder 921 head from the local and usual supply areas. Prices responded to the good to useful falls of rain over the Christmas break with improvements of 20c to 30c/kg and more in places. A fair panel of buyers was present and active however not all of the regulars operators have returned to the buying panel.

Light weight yearling steers to restockers made to a top of 448c with a good sample averaging 384c/kg. Yearling steers under 330kg returning to the paddock made to 390c and averaged a similar amount. Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market averaged 348c and made to 356c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to 350c to average 334c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock averaged 295c and made to 338c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged from 298c to 310c and made to 316c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed made to 292c to average 279c/kg.

Medium and heavy weight 3 score cows averaged 224c with heavy weights to 235c/kg. Good heavy cows made to 240c to average 238c/kg. Heavy weight bulls made to 296c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long report:

A small and mixed quality yarding to kick off the new year but the buying panel saw the return of most regular buyers. Overall, the market was stronger than where it finished last year. Cows experienced a very good lift with a lot of heavy cows to processors selling around 235c/kg and topping at 240c/kg. Lighter conditioned plain cows sold from 210-220c/kg and the small sample of store cows seen sold from 170-190c/kg. Not many kill heifers or bullocks to quote. Heavy feeder steers sold consistently around 330-335c/kg with sales to 350c/kg, trade steers made to 360c/kg with a lot of steers under 400kg from 340-350c/kg. Feeder heifers sold similar to last year’s prices, selling from 265-290c/kg with a few better pens of light feeder heifers making to 316c/kg. Weaner cattle saw a good lift as well. GDL sold a pen of angus steers for 448c/kg, however a lot of weaner steers sold from 380c/kg to just under $4.00/kg. There were some good soft euro heifers and a few nice pens of Santa heifers that sold very well, selling from 320-338c/kg, however a lot of weaner heifers sold from 260-290c/kg.
