Steer values ease as big pre-Easter drop seen in AuctionsPlus listings

FOLLOWING a week of record listings and with Easter holidays looming, cattle numbers on AuctionsPlus on Thursday were back to 6183 head, a decrease of 8100 on the week before.

Despite having a long weekend on the horizon, 265 bidders logged in with hopes of securing a bargain. The offering consisted of 1578 breeders, 1878 steers, 1393 heifers and 586 cow and calf units. Clearance rates were low again this week, however, after post-sale negotiations, AuctionsPlus administrators were expecting clearance rates to lift.

PTIC heifers this week averaged $1386 and sold to a top of $1610 for a line of Lawsons, Te Mania and Rennylea blood Angus heifers from Balmoral Park, Yea, VIC. These heifers were aged 18-29 months averaging 459kg and were PTIC to Angus bulls.

Proven breeders averaged $1365 and sold to a top of $1450 for a line of Rennylea blood Angus cows from Winterthur, Nundle, NSW. These cows were aged 3-5 years, averaged 446kg and were PTIC to Angus and Poll Hereford bulls.

From Mt Mica Grazing, Clermont, QLD a line of EU-accredited predominately Brahman cows, 2-10 years and PTIC to Brahman bulls, sold for $1175.

Cow and calf highlights include two lines from Sporne Enterprises, Clermont, QLD. The first, a line of Brahman and crossbred cows 2-12 years, with Brahman and Charolais sired calves at foot, and depastured to Brahman and Charolais bulls, sold for $1210. Another line of 3-13 year old lighter cows, similar description, made $1020.

A line of crossbred cows from Muckadilla, QLD, 2-4 years 433kg with Angus sired calves at foot sold for $1650.

From Strathbogie Pastoral, Emmaville, NSW two lines of cows and calves included one mob of 8-9 year olds portion with 4-5 months Angus calves at foot selling for $1410 and the second mob, a line of Angus and Angus cross cows 3-10 years, with Angus calves at foot and depastured to Angus bulls sold for $1300.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weight range:

  • Steers less than 250kg sold from 273c to 377c to average 343c/kg; while heifers sold from 277-294c to average 286c
  • Steers 250-300kg sold from 299-354c to average 327c; while heifers sold from 261-284c to average 275c
  • Steers 300-350kg sold from 301-317c to average 309c
