Winners weigh-in for RNA Paddock to Palate competition

Beef Central, 25/06/2015

Gyranda Pastoral Company from Theodore and Yulgilbar Pastoral Company from Baryulgil in NSW have taken out the blue ribbons in the first phase of the 2015 RNA Paddock to Palate Competition, presented by Mort and Co, held in Dalby today.

This year’s Paddock to Palate Competition attracted a record 1000 head of cattle, the most in the competition’s 18-year history.

The highly anticipated competition is the richest of its kind in the nation with $45,000 in prize money on offer. The competition brings together the nation’s top primary producers and sets a benchmark for the industry.

Gyranda Pastoral Company’s pen of six winning Santa Gertrudis had an Average Daily Gain (ADG) of 3.06 kg, just beating Yulgilbar Pastoral Company’s Santa Gurtrudis X Angus in Class 37, who had an ADG of 3.05 kg.

Yulgilbar Pastoral Company didn’t go home empty handed, with their pen of Santa Gertrudis taking out the new Class 38 with an ADG of 3.32 kg.

Class 37’s highest individual weight gain award went to Riverglen Pastoral Company for their Charolais X which had an ADG of 3.60 kg, while the highest individual weight gain award for Class 38 was taken out by GL Campbell & Co from Jambin for their Charbray which had an ADG of 3.80 kg.

The Paddock to Palate Competition now moves into its second phase – a carcass competition, followed by an MSA eating quality competition and finishing in a beef taste off – a palate competition where a portion of striploin is cooked and judged by expert chefs at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) in August.

The exhibitor who polls the highest aggregate score across the four categories is then awarded the overall prize which will be announced during the Ekka at a special Paddock to Palate Competition Awards Presentation Breakfast.

All steers will be forward sold over the hooks to JBS Australia Dinmore on a price and grid to be negotiated so that all exhibitors have full transparency on pricing. Similarly ration pricing will be advised to all exhibitors by Mort & Co.
