FIVE feedlots across Australia have been awarded for consistently producing cattle that achieve outstanding compliance rates to Meat Standards Australia specifications.

The 2019 MSA Excellence in Eating Quality Awards were held nationally throughout September and October, with a Most Outstanding MSA Feedlot Award presented in each state except Tasmania.

Cattle from feedlots accredited under the National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme (NFAS) and that were eligible for Australian Grainfed Standards were included in this award category.

The Awards recognised beef producers who have achieved outstanding compliance rates to MSA specifications, as well as high eating quality performance, as represented by MSA Index results for MSA graded cattle during 2017–18 and 2018–19.

Queensland

Kerwee Feedlot, Jondaryan, was awarded ‘Most Outstanding MSA Feedlot in Queensland’, based on its MSA compliance of 99.1% and an average MSA Index of 64.40 across 36,000 head consigned to MSA during 2017–19.

During 2017–19, 62% of all cattle consigned to MSA from Queensland were classified as grainfed.

NSW

Bective Station Feedlot, Tamworth, was awarded ‘Most Outstanding MSA Feedlot in NSW’, based on its 99.7% compliance to MSA requirements, and average MSA Index of 63.31.

During 2017–19, 48% of all cattle consigned to MSA from NSW were classified as grainfed.

Victoria

RM Gillett & Co Pty Ltd operating Jalna Feedlot at Anakie was awarded ‘Most Outstanding MSA Feedlot in Victoria’, having achieved an MSA compliance rate of 98.4% and average MSA Index of 62.10.

During 2017–19, 38% of all cattle consigned to MSA from Victoria were classified as grainfed.

Thomas Foods International’s Iranda Feedlot at Tintinara was awarded ‘Most Outstanding MSA Feedlot in South Australia’, based on its average MSA compliance of 99.5%, and average MSA Index of 62.81.

During 2017–19, 35% of all cattle consigned to MSA from South Australia were classified as grainfed.

WestBeef Feedlot at Kalannie in Western Australia’s Central Wheatbelt region was awarded ‘Most Outstanding MSA Feedlot in WA’, based on its MSA compliance of 99.5% and average MSA Index of 61.47.

During 2017–19, 39% of all cattle consigned to MSA from Western Australia were classified as grainfed.
