May live cattle exports to year high

Australian cattle exports rose to the highest monthly volume of the year in May.

Overall cattle exports totalled 87,080 head, 21 percent above the five-year-average for May.

Shipments to Indonesia totalled 55,656 head, supported by demand in the lead-up to Eid al-Adha in early June.

Australia has exported 211,050 head to Indonesia in the first five months of 2025, the largest January-May volume since the severe drought year of 2019.

After a lull in shipments to Vietnam in April exports to the market totalled 12,218 head in May.

Exports to Vietnam so far this year have totalled 29,538 head, 44 percent below the same period last year.

The Philippines received 6470 head, the highest monthly total delivered to the market for four years, while other countries to receive Australian cattle included Jordan (4398), Mexico (4757) and Malaysia (2584).

44,958 cattle were exported from Darwin in May, primarily to Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, followed by 17,277 from Broome (to Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam), 7215 from Portland (breeding cattle to Indonesia, Malaysia and Mexico), 7017 from Wyndham (to Indonesia), 7032 from Fremantle (to Jordan and Vietnam) and 3470 from Townsville (to Vietnam).
