Roma sale 8 July 2025: Large yarding of just over 8300 head

After a cool start and warm day, a large yarding of just over 8300 head at the Roma Saleyards saw all the regular processors, feedlotters, and backgrounders bidding amongst the action.

The yarding featured cattle consigned primarily from the local supply district, including Morven, St George, Wallumbilla, Miles, Condamine and Wandoan.

Cattle were also drawn from as far as McKinlay and Mount Isa in northern Queensland and Coonamble in New South Wales.

The quality and selection once again showcased Roma Saleyards as the marketplace of choice.

Scott Ridley from Coonamble, NSW offloaded a quality run of 335 composite cross Angus cattle.

A line of composite cross Angus weaner steers averaged 411c/kg to weigh 294kg for a return of $1,211/hd.

Weaned straight from Mr Ridley’s agistments country between Bollon and St George, the top pen fetched 432c/kg weighing an average 290kg to make $1,251/hd.

A further pen on the heavier end sold for 402c/kg weighing 348kg for a return of $1,399/hd.

The line was consigned through Nutrien.

Larry Bidgood of ‘Wurama’, Condamine offloaded a quality pen of Angus steers fetching 464c/kg to weigh 298kg for a return of $1,384/hd.

S.D & M.J Russell of ‘Wodonga’, Mungallala sold a large line of 137 Charolais cross steers to average 430c/kg weighing 277kg to make $1,182/hd.

Three pens of Charolais cross steers fetched a straight 442c/kg to weigh 269kg for an average return of $1,191/hd.

Part of their annual turnoff, a pen of the Russell’s weaner steers made 400c/kg weighing 332kg for a return of $1,327/hd.

L.L & S.D Bode of ‘Percol Plains’, McKinlay, offloaded a run of 190 steers to average 374c/kg weighing in at 316kg for a return of $1,181/hd.

A pen of Angus cross steers fetched 392c/kg to weigh 345kg for a return of $1,351/hd.

A further pen of Droughtmaster cross steers made 372c/kg  for an average weight of 351kg to fetch $1,307/hd.

David and Jenny Sullivan from Studly Ag, Roma, sold two pens of Angus cross steers under the hammer for a straight 371c/kg to weigh 683kg for a return of $2,533/hd.

The Jones’, of ‘Evergreen’, Injune, offloaded a run of Charolais cross steers to make 412c/kg weighing an average 271kg for a return of $1,117kg.

NLRS Commentary:

A few extra numbers where Roma Agents yarded 8,356 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present. A mixed quality yarding presented. Cattle were drawn from NSW western QLD and the regular supply areas. The market did not reach levels of last sale with the exception of cows which were 10 to 15c/kg stronger.

Yearling steers 200 to 280kg sold from 324c to 464c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg  with the majority making to 464c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg also lost ground and made to 418c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg topped 390c/kg which is on parr with last sale. Yearling steers over 480kg made 370c to feed and 372c/kg to processors.

Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold to to a dearer trend and made to 336c to restockers and averaged 315c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg made to 334c to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg sold to 340c to feed and 302c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg made to 340c/kg.

Grown steers 500 to 600kg made to 346c to processors and 381c/kg to feed. Grown steers over 600kg sold to 372c/kg to processors. Grown heifers over 540kg sold to 340c/kg Once again a large run (1850 head) cows penned and sold to a dearer trend up lost 15c/kg on last sale. The 2 score cows sold from 200c to 285c and some Preg Tested cows sold to 335c/kg to processors. The 3 score cows made to 344c to average 321c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg topped 322c/kg. Bulls over 600kg made to 310c processors and 341c/kg to restockers.

A total of 8,356 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 402c/kg and averaged 299c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 464c/kg and averaged 401c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 464c/kg and averaged 394c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 418c/kg and averaged 375c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 390c/kg and averaged 368c/kg.

RA & SA Bain, Mt Eden, Roma, sold Angus steers to 464c/kg, reaching a top of $1,273 to average $1,115.

Larry Bidgood, Wurama, Condamine, sold Angus steers to 464c/kg, reaching a top of $1,383 to average $1,336.

SD & MJ Russell, Wodonga, Mungallala, sold Charolais cross steers to 442c/kg, reaching a top of $1,961 to average $1,190.

Yambutta Pastoral Co, Boolara, Meandarra, sold Simmental cross steers to 442c/kg, reaching a top of $1,364 to average $1,303.

Heifers under 200kg topped at 320c/kg and averaged 307c/kg, while heifers in the 200-280kg range topped at 336c/kg and averaged 309c/kg. Heifers in the 280-330kg range topped at 336c/kg, averaging 310c/kg. Heifers in the 330-400kg range topped at 338c/kg, averaging 297c/kg. Heifers in the 400-500kg range topped at 342c/kg, averaging 316c/kg.

 

Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 270c/kg and averaged 218c/kg. Cows in the 400-500kg range topped at 325c/kg, averaging 275c/kg. Cows in the 500-600kg range topped at 340c/kg, averaging 309c/kg. Cows over 600kg topped at 344c/kg, averaging 331c/kg.
