PRA conference to tackle land access issues for producers

Beef Central 27/05/2025

EQUIPPING landholders with practical knowledge and tools to manage land access requests is a key focus of the 2025 Property Rights Australia conference, to be held at Emerald, Qld, on Saturday, June 7.

“Landholders need to know their rights, when they can say no, and what aspects of their business to protect when faced with requests for entry,” acting chair Dale Stiller said.

“Coal seam gas companies and renewable energy developers, often backed by legal teams, can pressure landholders into premature agreements. PRA aims to ensure landholders are prepared for these initial discussions.”

The conference will also address protections available to landowners when non-agricultural land use such as renewables, national parks, or carbon credit schemes are proposed next door.

“Landowners and local communities are too often the last to be considered during changes in land use by more powerful interests,” Mr Stiller said. “Proper planning and improved protections are essential.”

Presentations from lawyers David Knobel, Leanne O’Neill, and industry advocates Zena Ronnfeldt and Josie Angus, will cover topics including:

  • Landholder rights regarding access requests from CSG, mining, resource, and renewable energy companies, including the launch of a Glovebox Guide written by Dr Shay Dougall.
  • Managing competing land uses next door, including renewable energy sites, directional drilling, national parks, or carbon schemes.
  • Native title, Indigenous cultural heritage, and Queensland’s Aboriginal Land Act.
  • The EU deforestation debate and how the Australian industry can respond to the misuse of terminology.

The 2025 PRA Conference and AGM is being held on Saturday, 7 June in Emerald. Registration from 8:30am; conference runs 9am–3:15pm.

Registration is $110 for non-members and $100 for PRA members, with discount before 1 June.
