AS one of the steps towards the establishment of a potential national ag trade apprenticeship, industry body Skills Insight is consulting with industry stakeholders to improve the visibility of agricultural career pathways and attract new entrants.
Skills Insight is a not-for-profit, Federal Government funded, industry-led organisation and one of ten Jobs and Skills Councils. The organisation works with stakeholders who share a passion for improving skills and training across the agribusiness, fibre, furnishing, food, animal and environment care industries.
From 2023 to 2024, Skills Insight engaged with stakeholders across the country to investigate how an agricultural trade apprenticeship could be implemented to help attract new entrants and promote career pathways in agriculture.
The research insights were summarised to produce an Ag Trade Apprenticeship Feasibility Report last year.
One of the recommended next steps in the work towards a potential Ag Trade Apprenticeship was the mapping of agricultural career pathways, which is now underway.
Ag stakeholders are now invited to contribute to mapping agricultural career pathways as part of the program. Input will help provide insight into existing job roles and the broad opportunities and appeal of a career in agriculture.
Consultation workshops are being held around Australia and online to collect insights during April and May. Further opportunities for input will be available throughout the project.
“An apprenticeship model offers employers a way to attract and nurture new entrants to the industry and provides the next generation of agricultural workers with a structured career pathway to learn on the job,” said Ben Rogers, the National Farmers Federation’s general manager or workplace relations.
“More broadly it showcases the professionalism of the industry and the exciting and diverse opportunities offered by a career in ag,” he said. NFF outlined the need for an agricultural apprenticeship in its 2030 Roadmap, and supports Skills Insight’s work exploring how this can be achieved.
Consultation workshops
To support the growth of Australia’s ag industry, Skills Insight is investigating how to strengthen the attraction of agriculture careers by mapping pathways for cross-functional careers with qualifications in the agriculture, horticulture and conservation and land management training package. This project is also key to identifying a potential agricultural trade qualification pathway.
Skills Insight is consulting with agricultural industry bodies, employers, unions, RTOs, First Nations organisations and other interested stakeholders on improving the visibility of ag career pathways.
During April and May, consultation workshops (both live and online) will be held to collect input on existing job roles, improving job titles to better reflect the appeal of agricultural work, and mapping career pathways.
Mapping ag career pathways will include all job roles and titles, whether linked to a qualification or commonly used in workplaces, and transferability of skills from one job to another job relating to agriculture, agribusiness, agronomy, dairy, feedlot, horticulture (production, protected, medicinal cannabis or otherwise), irrigation, livestock, permaculture, pest management, rural operations and merchandising, shearing and wool and viticulture.
Insights from these consultations will help provide guidance for how career pathways can reflect current and emerging workforce requirements, and provide crucial information for developing a potential Certificate-III agricultural trade qualification.
A steering committee has been put together to guide the project. A report outlining the consultation findings will be put together for consideration by the Project Steering Committee before being made available for industry review and feedback.
