THE Australian Lot Feeders Association’s 2024 Young Lotfeeder of the Year is 28-year old Angus Lee, feedlot manager at Australian Country Choice’s Opal Creek feedlot near Millmerran in southern Queensland.
Angus (no relation to ACC principals, Trevor Lee and family) was crowned the 2024 winner during the grainfed industry’s BeefEx conference in Brisbane yesterday.
He joins an illustrious group of former winners of the Young Lotfeeder award stretching back to 1991 – many of whom have gone on to senior management and industry representation roles across the beef industry.
The two other finalists this year were Brenton Watterson, operations manager at AA Co’s Aronui feedlot near Bell, and Kassandra Lees, from Stockyard’s Kerwee feedlot near Jondaryan.
Sponsored by Performance Feeds, the ALFA Young Lot Feeder of the Year Award aims to foster individuals who have a clear outlook for the future of the feedlot industry, and an aptitude for leadership in their work.
After formal interviews with the independent judging panel followed by a presentation and meet & greet with the ALFA Board in Sydney, three of the six finalists progressed to the grand final stage.
Angus impressed the judging panel with his essay titled “Changing public perceptions of feedlots through improved advocacy and policy to ensure we maintain our social license to operate”, demonstrating his innovative forward thinking, imperative for the industry’s future.
“ALFA is consistently impressed by the calibre of young people this Award brings forward each year, with Angus being a standout in their presence, passion, and thoughtful leadership,” Presdient Barb Madden said.
