Yarding: 5635 Change: – 1678

It may have been a decreased yarding at Roma Saleyards this week, but the quality remained solid and so too the prices.

Just over 5500 head of cattle went to market with firm to slightly dearer trends reflected in some categories.

Agents noted scattered showers recorded over the previous week, paired with seasonal timing, impacted the local supply areas.

The market was reflective of condition, however quality lines remained firm and sold to an active buyer presence of processors, backgrounders and feed-lotters.

Local and afar cattle made up the yarding with lines once again drawn primarily from western regions such as Barcaldine, Longreach, Aramac, Julia Creek, McKinlay, Cooladdi and Hungerford among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Broken Hill and Mungindi, New South Wales.

The yarding featured several lines of quality oats-finished bullocks and heavy steers.

A pen of his 14 Angus cross steers fetched 346c/kg to weigh 557kg and returned $1929/hd.

A further pen of his 19 Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched 346c/kg to weigh 537kg and returned $1860/hd.

The Bright family also offloaded 60 Angus cross and Droughtmaster cross steers to average 344c/kg to weigh 503kg and returned $1731/hd.

Based at Koroola Park, Surat, the lined had recently finished off on oats.

A further pen of their nine Droughtmaster steers sold for 330c/kg weighing 481kg to return $1588/hd.

The bullock job showed no signs of slowing down with the Johnson family, Waverly Downs, Roma, who sold 90 Hereford cross and Angus cross steers to average 344c/kg to weigh 627kg and returned $2154/hd.

A pen of their 19 Hereford cross steers fetched 354c/kg to weigh 614kg and returned $2176/hd.

A further pen of their 17 Hereford cross steers sold for 340c/kg weighing 678kg to return $2307/hd.

The two pens both saw an increase on last week’s maximum of 336c/kg in the over 600-kilogram weight range category.

The line had recently finished off on oats.

The weaner steer market also held firm at this week’s sale reflecting dearer prices.

The Davison family, Lorne, Aramac sold 46 Charolais cross and mixed cross weaner steers to average 400c/kg at 255kg and returned $1022/hd.

A pen of their 17 Charolais cross steers sold for 412c/kg to weigh 249kg and returned $1028/hd.

Further vendors the McQueen family, Strathfillan Station, Winton offloaded a line of 265 Charolais cross and mixed cross weaner steers to average 392c/kg weighing 248kg to return $975/hd.

Two pens of their Charolais cross weaner steers sold for a straight 428c/kg.

A pen of their 28 steers fetched 428c/kg to weigh 218kg and returned $931/hd.

The pen saw an increase of 14 cents on last week’s maximum of 414c/kg in the 200-to-280-kilogram weight range category.

In the heifer selection, heifers in the 280-to-330-kilogram range topped at 318c/kg, averaging 269c/kg.

Bruce Dawes, Barr Park, Roma sold Santa Gertrudis cross heifers to 334c/kg, reaching a top of $1648 to average $1556.

The Sanderson family, Mundalya, Yuleba sold Santa Gertrudis cross heifers to 311c/kg, reaching a top of $1127 to average $1030.

Cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 306c/kg, averaging 235c/kg, while cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 290c/kg, averaging 265c/kg.

NLRS Commentary:

With scattered showers in the supply area Roma Agents yarded 5,635 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present and active. A quality yarding of oats bullocks and steers as well as prime condition cows. The market dearer by 5c to 10c/kg in places mainly for light weight yearling steers and heifers.

Yearling steers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 308c to 430c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg topped 412c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg made to 396c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg could not maintain the levels of last sale and sold to 372c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg also lost ground and sold from 300c to 362c/kg.

Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold from 200c to 305c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg with most making to 318c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg lost ground and sold from 220c to 314c/kg to feed with the 400 to 480kg making to 316c/kg back to the paddock. Yearling heifers over 480kg made 335c/kg to processors.

Grown steers 500 to 600kg sold from 210c to 334c/kg. Quality pens of oats bullocks over 600kg and sold to 354c/kg. Grown heifers over 540kg topped 322c/kg. Another yarding of well finished cows were on offer. The 2 score 400 to 520kg sold 200c to 270c/kg.The 3 score cows over 520kg topped 300c/kg. Bull over 600kg topped 291c/kg and bulls under 600kg made to 330c/kg.
