The Wagga cattle market rallied on the back of dearer trends last week, in a smaller offering of 2240.
There was a big step up in bidding for secondary cattle with lot feeders, restockers and a boat order all vying to secure well-bred secondary cattle under 400kg.
Rain reduced numbers of secondary steers and intensified bidding with prices for feed on steers 2-6c dearer making from 300-335c/kg. Medium weight steers topped at 335c to average 325c/kg.
Feeder type heifers attracted a large field of buyers who pushed prices 8c higher. Heifers 330-400kg sold from 260-316c/kg.
The growing confidence in a decent spring kicked light weight secondary steers and heifer’s 15-43c/kg higher. The heifer portion enjoyed the bigger lift topping at 304c or $760 per head. Quality steers back to the paddock made from 260-334c/kg.
Well finished supplementary fed trade heifers bounced 30c making from 280-315c/kg. Trade steers gained 9c selling at 322-334c/kg.
The results for heavy steers and bullocks were impressive, with only one penning slipping under 300c/kg. Prices ranged from 270-344c a lift of 24c/kg. Heavy heifers with shape also attracted plenty of bidding making from 280c 310c for the better shaped.
The cow market surged 10-30c/kg. But the real strength of the market was across the leaner categories. Lean cows sold from 224-264c/kg. Heavy cows gained 10c making from 248-283c/kg.
