WA Ag Minister returns to Indonesia

Beef Central, 12/09/2011

Western Australia’s agriculture minister Terry Redman has returned to Indonesia to examine improvements to supply chains and to hold talks with the nation’s ministers for agriculture and trade and director general of livestock.

He also plans to discuss the sponsorship of workshops within Indonesia to increase the knowledge and skills of senior Government officials and livestock industry managers responsible for the development of OIE-standard supply chains in the market.

The workshops would be undertaken by Western Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Food and Meat and Livestock Australia.

Mr Redman visited Indonesia after the Federal Government suspended the live cattle export trade to the market in June.

On this visit he will inspect an Indonesian abattoir intended for processing Australian cattle.

“My previous visit in June was focused on what we could do to help get improvements in place to get trade restarted,” he said.

“This time it’s about looking at what has been done, is continuing to be rolled out, and what further work is needed to ensure a sustained future for the trade.”

“I am keen to reinforce how much we value our trade relationship with Indonesia as a food supplier to their community, and also stress the importance we place on high animal welfare standards.

Mr Redman’s delegation includes a representative from the Department of Agriculture and Food, and WA Livestock Exporters’ Association.
