Martin Bunyard, 20/04/2016

NLRS sale commentary:

Yarding 5100 Change 322

Yarding numbers rose slightly, but the quality of cattle penned declined significantly from the previous store sale.

Light weight steer and heifer calves improved in price with a Northern Queensland restocker buyer providing some competition. Most other classes of store cattle were cheaper and store cows declined 6c/kg on average in price. Steer calves sold to 342c and averaged 321c, up 9c, while heifer calves made to 294c and averaged 282c, up 29c/kg. Light weight yearling steers reached 348c and averaged 321c, down 6c, while slightly heavier sorts were 17c cheaper and reached 318c and averaged 308c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed earned to 307c and averaged 291c, down 7c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed topped at 288c and averaged 281c, down 14c/kg, mainly due to the plainer quality on offer.

Light weight yearling heifers sold to 307c and averaged between 277c and 291c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feedlot buyers hit 280c and averaged 264c, down 1c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed made to 248c, while those to the local trade market sold to 268c and averaged 252c/kg. The store cows sold between 180c and 195c/kg. Medium weight 3 score cows earned to 217c and averaged 207c, down 6c/kg.
