A WIDE range of winners was recently announced in the fourth annual JBS Townsville carcase and eating quality competition, with a grazing family from Hughenden being a stand out on the night.

In a bid to allow producers to benchmark their cattle against others and to gain direct feedback from the processor.

Producers Alan and Carmel Bethel from Hughenden were standout performers on the evening, taking out Highest MSA Index Individual Carcase (HGP Free) Champion, JBS Producer Compliance Order Reserve Champion, and On Hook Carcase Pen of Three (HGP Free) Runner Up.

“We’ve supplied JBS for more than a decade, so it’s incredibly rewarding to see that consistency of our herd recognised across the different measures,” Carmel said.

JBS Townsville Livestock Manager Aaron Adcock praised all entrants for their high-quality cattle.

“This competition highlights the strength and consistency of livestock coming out of North Queensland, while also giving producers meaningful data to support on-farm decision-making,” Mr Adcock said.

“It’s great to see such strong engagement from producers committed to delivering quality outcomes, and I congratulate all entrants and placegetters on their achievements.”

Alongside the Carcase Competition, a blind tasting of five different breeds from the competition were tasted and judged by attendees. Angus X was crowned the champion breed based on flavour, texture, taste, appearance and overall liking.
