Survey seeks help to understand grassfed beef producer intentions

Beef Central 13/04/2026

GRASSFED beef producers are being asked to participate in the latest Meat & Livestock Australia Beef Producer Intentions Survey, being conducted during April.

The BPIS is an MLA initiative to gain insights into the Australian beef herd and understand the future intentions of producers in the grassfed sector.

Now entering its fourth year, the survey helps underpin industry forecasts and analysis, guiding MLA programs and ensuring adoption and communication efforts match industry sentiment.

The data collected from responses are an essential input into MLA cattle industry projections, which forecast the national cattle herd, slaughter, production and exports.

MLA said the evolving situation globally (which has implications for the domestic supply chain), in addition to forecasted drier weather conditions for the next six months, would likely impact farm decision making.

The BPIS survey is conducted three times a year. The April survey covers producers’ plans for the upcoming breeding season and other related branding and weaning issues, expected weight and sales forecasts.

In the next survey in July, a short qiestionairre will be conducted for updated estimates on producer intentions, calving estimates and updated sales figures.

The final survey in November, aims to gather an overview of the herd profile, producer sentiment, breed demographics, producer intentions and sales to date.

Once available, aggregated survey data is published in public reports, accessible to everyone. Additionally, participants can opt-in to receive a report card comparing their responses to aggregated regional data.

All responses are confidential, and the survey should take no more than ten minutes.
