The Cattle Transaction Levy Review Committee has provided an update on progress in its review of the grassfed cattle levy, with early consultation now underway and further opportunities for stakeholder input to follow in the coming months.
The review is examining whether current levy settings remain fit for purpose and how levy investments can continue to deliver benefits for cattle producers. It is the first comprehensive review of the levy arrangements in many years and is intended to ensure the system remains responsive to current and future industry needs.
To date, the Committee has commenced its analysis and evaluation phase, including the release of an initial discussion paper outlining key principles to guide the review. The Committee is also seeking stakeholder views on the effectiveness of current levy investments, options to improve flexibility and transparency, and opportunities to strengthen the long-term impact of levy-funded activities.
Over coming weeks, the review will continue through additional consultation activities, including stakeholder surveys, further discussion materials and industry engagement opportunities during July and August. All feedback will inform the Committee’s recommendations, which are expected to be finalised over the next few months ahead of consideration by levy payers at the end of the year.
Committee Chair Bryce Camm said the review was an important opportunity to test whether the levy framework is delivering the strongest possible benefits for producers.
“This review is about making sure the cattle levy remains fit for purpose and capable of supporting the priorities of our industry into the future,” Mr Camm said.
“We are encouraging producers and stakeholders to take part in the consultation process, so we get a broad range of perspectives before recommendations are finalised.”
The Committee encourages all interested stakeholders to get involved in the review process and provide feedback as consultation continues.

Funny how they manage to collect everyone’s money … but after so many years & so many promises … they still apparently can’t work out how to contact & properly poll or engage with levy payers.
I wish I had a magical source of millions of dollars that I couldn’t work out where it was coming from!
It would be very interesting to see the results of this “consultation”: what % of producers actually responded, what was the majority sentiment among responders … but transparency & democracy are foreign concepts to those who think they know how our industry should be run.
The mere fact that the MLA can waist millions of cattle levy money on becoming carbon neutral would be a Hugh indication that the levy is too bloody high
The cattle levy is only at $1-$2 per head in the USA
Not only that,the MLA not that long ago ran a campaign advising Australians to eat LESS red meat. Spending red meat producers donated money to advise the Australian public to eat less red meat, you must be all smoking crack
