Fuel, fertiliser, freight – What the F is going on?

Beef Central 17/04/2026

Regardless of how current hostilities in the Middle East unfold, the supply chains underpinning fuel, fertiliser and freight have been significantly disrupted and a challenging period lies ahead.

Combined with the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, the decline of Australian refining and manufacturing capacity, critically low emergency fuel reserves and now a fire impact to one of Australia’s only two refineries, this situation is unlike anything we have experienced before.

At a lunch at Brisbane’s Amora Hotel on Frfiday, May 1, the Rural Press Club of Queensland will bring together three industry experts with deep operational experience and real exposure to sourcing and servicing the fuel, fertiliser and freight sectors.

Their insights will be direct, practical and straight from the coal face.

Stewart Morland has spent nearly five decades in the fuel industry, beginning in his family’s Shell distributorship in Springwood, Brisbane. He is now Director and part owner of IOR, which operates the Eromanga Refinery and maintains significant diesel and aviation fuel storage and distribution infrastructure across regional Australia.

Josh McGregor is Managing Director of McGregor Gourlay, established in 1897 and now one of the largest fertiliser distributors on Australia’s east coast. His career includes senior roles with Nutrien/Landmark and CRT, along with two decades of importing fertiliser. With natural gas a key input – much of it sourced from the Middle East – global disruptions have direct implications for supply.

Jared Seiler is President of the Livestock and Rural Transporters Association of Queensland and Director of Seiler Transport, based in Kingaroy. With strong ties to both primary production and transport, he understands the critical role freight plays across the agricultural sector. Quite simply, the country runs on diesel trucks.

If you are involved in food production, regional Australia, or simply rely on fuel to go about your day, this is valuable opportunity to gain deeper insights into a fuel crisis that is effecting every business in the country.
